4 Important things you should look into before Immigrating to Quebec

Quebec attracts thousands of immigrants every year with its unique French heritage and low cost of living. But Quebec is like a different country within Canada, as the province has set itself apart from English Canada with its unique culture, language, food etc. So living in Quebec is an entirely different experience altogether.

Here are four important things that you must look into, before immigrating to Quebec

Where to live:

Most of the immigrants prefer to settle in Montreal. About 85 percent of the immigrants reside in this city. Montreal is marked by a dynamic economy, rich culture, vast employment opportunities, greenery and quality life. But there are a few other places in Quebec that offer vast job opportunities and quality of life, such as Abitibi-Témiscamingue, Bas-Saint-Laurent, Capitale-Nationale (ville de Québec) etc. You can seek the services that provide guidance to newcomers in these regions on matters such as housing and choosing schools for children.

Starting a life:

Once you reach Quebec, you will have to do a few things to start a new life there. These include opening a bank account, getting health insurance and driving license, and finding a place to live. For all these, you will need documents such as your passport and your work permit. Though most of such procedures are simple, it may take a long time to complete.

Housing:

Upon landing in Quebec, you can stay with friends or at a short-term centre as a temporary arrangement till you find a permanent housing. Explore the neighbourhoods and consider the proximity to work and school while choosing an area for residence. You must also check if public transport facilities are available there. Once you zero in on a particular area, you can monitor the ads to find a home there.

Cost of living and tax:

The cost of living is different in different regions. While cities such as Montreal and Quebec City are expensive, it is highly affordable to live in small towns. But you may have to compromise on things such as convenience and fast internet, while choosing small towns.

Remember, while you are in Quebec, you will have to file two tax returns every year. The province has heavy taxation, paperwork and bureaucracy.

5 Tips that can help you to improve your CRS scores

The Express Entry system that manages three popular Canada immigration pathways-the Federal Skilled Worker Class (FSWC), Federal Skilled Trades Class (FSTC), and Canadian Experience Class (CEC)-uses Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) to select eligible candidates. The candidates who score higher CRS points are invited to apply for permanent residence in Canada. So, to score as many CRS points as possible is the best way to immigrate to Canada through Express Entry.

The maximum CRS points available for a candidate is 1200. A candidate can get 600 CRS points a nomination from a Canadian province. Up to 500 points are awarded on human capital factors and 100 points for skills transferability.

How to improve your CRS score?

Even if you have already entered the Express Entry pool, there are a number of ways through which you can improve your CRS score. The changes you can make may be small, like improving your IELTS scores. But these changes can make a significant effect on your ranking in the Express Entry pool. Here are five important tips to improve your CRS scores.

Education

Earning one or two certificates, diplomas or degrees more will earn you a few extra CRS points under the education category. An additional level of education will also help you earn extra points. It means, if you are a graduate, earn a postgraduate degree or diploma that will convert into more CRS points.

Another way to earn more CRS points is by pursuing a course in Canada before submitting your profile to Express Entry.

Language

With the language factor, a candidate can earn up to 136 points. If the points that you have earned for language proficiency are low, you can take a re-test and improve your scores. If your points have increased, that will reflect in your CRS scores. Canada has two official language-English and French. If possible, take a French class and learn the language to earn more (15) CRS points.

Work

If your work experience is less than three years, it is better to keep working to earn maximum CRS points under the work factor. Obtaining a valid job offer from a Canadian employer can help you earn more CRS points (200 points if it is an O level job and 50 points if the occupation comes under A or B level). Though it is difficult to obtain a job offer from Canada, you can try your luck with online resources, while you wait to receive your ITA.

Spouse

The level of education, language proficiency and work experience of your spouse may help you earn some extra CRS points. The first language scores of your spouse can add a maximum of 20 CRS points. You can earn another 10 points by getting done the ECA of your spouse’s educational qualification.

Provincial Nominee Programs

If you have the nomination certificate of a province, it can earn you 600 additional CRS points. So it is better to try for Canada migration through one of the PNP streams aligned to Express Entry. But you have to apply right and when a particular PNP category opens to accept applications.

New Zealand Universities Welcome Post-Study Work Right Proposals

Recent announcements made by Immigration Minister lay Lees Galloway regarding Post-Study Work Right Proposals for international students has been welcomed by the universities of New Zealand.

New Zealand is a country which believes that the contribution of international students could help strengthen and develop the New Zealand economy. The year 2017 had more than 3500 international students at Victoria and the numbers are expected to rise this year.

Though the numbers are on the rise, a huge number of students migrate with the false conception that a post-study work visa can help them obtain a fast track residency in New Zealand, leading them to be sponsored by unethical employees. As a result, students often end up getting jobs which have no real demand.

In an effort to overcome this, changes have been made to the post-study work visa which includes:

1. Providing a one-year post-study work visa for non-degree level 7 or qualifications below.

2. Providing a three-year post-study work visa for degree level 7 or above qualifications.

3. Students completing a non-degree level 7 or below to undertake a minimum of two years of study to gain eligibility for post-study work rights.

4. Removing the requirement post-study work visa to be sponsored by a particular employer.

It is expected that these changes could elevate the general skill level of the migrants who are about to be granted permanent residency and prevent fraudulent practices from agents. International students are considered as an important part of New Zealand’s university sector. Presence of International Students in New Zealand could help in creating an atmosphere that is both financially well & vibrant. Changes in the post-study work visa would make sure that the country gets the skills it needs.
