How working part-time in Canada can help international students to get a Permanent Residency?

International students in Canada can work more than 20 hours per week. This announcement from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) in October 2022 broke the earlier weekly limit of just 20 hours. And the news has sparked joy for international students since they can earn more. In fact, increased part-time working hours can boost your CRS points while applying for a Canada PR. Want to know how? Hop in and let’s explore!

What’s the BIG news and why?

International students in Canada can now work off-campus for over 20 hours per week. This has come into effect from 15th October 2022 and will extend till end of 2023. Canada’s immigration minister has highlighted these changes to alleviate the labour shortage in the country. Nevertheless, IRCC is also keen that students must focus on academics as well.

What’s the benefit?

Students look at this announcement as a move to support themselves financially for academic and living expenses. Earlier, students could do part-time work in Canada for 20 per week and can work full-time during academic breaks. Notably, most international students in Canada work part-time during their academics.

How part-time work in Canada can help you for obtaining a PR?

The total work hours spent during your part-time jobs will be counted when you apply for a Canada Permanent Residency. In that case, you must enrol in a one-year full-time program. Here’s how your part-time work in Canada are converted to full-time work hours:

Hours of work Full-time hours calculated
15 hours/week for 24 months 1 year full-time (1,560 hours)
30 hours/week for 12 months at more than 1 job 1 year full-time (1,560 hours)

So, the 20+ hours per week can eventually speed up your chance of getting a PR.

These work hours will be validated for your Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) point. The CRS points boost your profile when you apply for a PR through the Express Entry program under the Canadian Experience class.

Statistics also highlight that international students who get a Permanent Residency in Canada fit quickly into the labour market. And this is because of their Canadian work experience and education.

Who is eligible to work-off campus for 20+ hours/week?

You can do part-time work in Canada if you’re:

  • Currently studying in Canada and are eligible to work off-campus
  • Applied for a study permit and ready to begin your studies
  • Future international student starting education before end of 2023

What are the PR pathways for international students in Canada?

Firstly, you must apply for a Post Graduate Work Permit (PGWP) once you graduate. The duration of PGWP is usually the same as your study program. Once you earn work experience with a PGWP, you can apply for Canadian PR under the Express Entry program.

Here are the PR pathways:

1. Canadian Experience Class (CEC)
2. Federal Skilled Workers Program (FSWP)
3. Provincial Nominee Program (PNP)
4. Quebec Immigration Programs

Reunite with your parents/grandparents through Canada Super Visa

It was a few months ago, Canada announced that they were planning to extend the validity of Super Visa for parents per entry to five years from two years. The news was welcomed with so much excitement by the immigrants. Canada Super Visa allows parents and grandparents of Canadian permanent residents and citizens to visit them and stay with them for a maximum period of five years per entry, without having to renew their visa. The validity of Super Visa for parents is 10 years. The Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) says that Canada issues around 17000 Super Visas every year.

What is Canada Super Visa?

Canada super visa

Canada Super Visa is a great option for those who wish to bring their parents or grandparents to Canada. It is an alternative to the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP), which grants permanent residence status to parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens and permanent residents. However, the demand for this program is very high and only a limited number of persons would be able to sponsor their parents/grandparents for permanent residence in Canada under this Program. Every year, the IRCC receives around 20000 interest-to-sponsor forms under the PGP program. But only 35000 applications are available.

Further, PGP operates on lottery. But as Super Visa does not operate on lottery, families have greater certainty on whether or not they would obtain the Super Visa. Besides, Super Visa is processed within months while PGP processing may take years. Because of all these reasons, Canada Super Visa is a viable choice for those who plan to bring their parents or grandparents to Canada.

Who is eligible for Canada Super Visa?
Australia Spouse Visa

To become eligible for parents Super Visa, you must meet the following requirements:

  • You must be the parent/grandparent of a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.
  • You must have received a letter from your child/grandchild, inviting you to Canada. The letter must include:
  • A promise that they would support you financially for the length of your visit.
  • The list and number of people in the household of the sponsoring person
  • A copy of the document proving Canadian citizenship/permanent resident status of the sponsoring person.

Canada immigration authorities would also consider a few other factors, while considering you for granting Canada Super Visa for parents. They must be convinced that you are a genuine visitor and would leave the country at the end of your visit. For this purpose, they would check:

  • Tied with your home country
  • Purpose of your visit
  • Your family and your financial condition
  • Overall political/economic stability of your home country

Medical Insurance for Super Visa

The sponsored person under Canada Super Visa for parents must have purchased a medical insurance from a Canadian insurance company, with a validity of at least one year from the date of entry. The policy must provide a minimum coverage of $100,000. They must also submit proof for paying medical insurance.

Recently it had been announced that Canada’s Immigration Minister would be given the authority to designate international medical insurance companies to provide coverage to Super Visa applicants in the future.  But not further update on the matter has been made on the matter till date.

Frequently Asked Questions

How to apply for a Super Visa?

You can apply online on the IRCC Portal for Super Visa for parents. It is mandatory that you are outside Canada while applying for Canada Super Visa. If you need assistance to apply for Canada Super Visa, contact CanApprove.
