Canada to spend $1.5 million for supporting newcomers in healthcare sector

Canada will be spending around $1.5 million for helping newcomers work in the healthcare sector of Canada. The fund will be spent on promoting collaboration and information sharing within the healthcare sector of the country. Using the fund, facilities would also be created for internationally trained healthcare professionals to get their credentials recognized faster.

The project builds on the success of the National Newcomer Navigation Network (N4), which was launched by the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario in 2019. It is in fact an online platform for foreign healthcare professionals who wish to work in Canada. It helps them secure a job in the healthcare sector of Canada. With the new funding, N4 would also turn into a platform for the newcomers to find information on qualification and credential recognition in all provinces and territories outside Quebec.

The healthcare sector of Canada is facing a tight labour market. There is record number of job vacancies in the healthcare and social assistance sectors of Canada. As in March 2022, there were a total of 154500 job vacancies in the country. In total, the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has set aside a total of $1.02 billion for the settlement services in 2022-23. It means 11% increase in allocation compared to last year.

Canada migration pathways for healthcare workers

Express Entry

Eligible healthcare workers may apply for Canada PR through the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP) or Canadian Experience Class (CEC) under Express Entry. Although the selection of candidates from these two programs is paused for the time being, Canada would be resuming draws under these two programs early in July.

Provincial Nominee Program

Provincial Nominee Programs allow provinces and territories in Canada to nominate eligible candidates for permanent residence in the country. Some PNPs have exclusive immigration pathways for healthcare workers. The Express Entry candidates who are nominated by the provinces will have 600 Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score points added to their total score and this would guarantee them an invitation to apply for permanent residence in Canada in a subsequent Express Entry draw.

  • Nova Scotia Labour Market Priorities Stream
  • Ontario Human Capital Priorities Stream
  • Saskatchewan International Health Worker EOI pool

The healthcare workers who wish to work in the province of Quebec may apply under the Regular Skilled Worker Program or Quebec Experience Program.
