Options to stay back in Germany for international students

A number of international students prefer to stay back in Germany even after their studies and look for a job. Germany is a country with low unemployment and so, chances are high for international students to obtain a job in this European country after completing their studies here. Germany’s Residence permit only for work

The international students who wish to stay back in Germany after the completion of their studies can apply for a Germany residence permit for work. This is especially helpful for those who wish to build a career abroad. With this residence permit, you may look for a good job in Germany. The validity of this visa is 18 months.

The documents required to apply for this residence permit are as follows:

1. Passport

2. Document to prove that you have completed the university degree

3. Your health insurance certificate

4. Bank statement to prove that you can support yourself during your stay in Germany.

Job Seeker Visa in Germany

This visa is for those who have returned to their native region after the studies. This is not for those who are staying back in Germany for seeking a job. The validity of this visa is six months. Those who have earned a degree from universities outside Germany may also apply for visa. But they must prove that they have enough funds to support their stay in Germany.

Germany’s Residence Permit for the employed

This category is for those students who have already found a suitable job. These candidates may apply either for a Residence Permit of Germany or for an EU Blue card. Those who have obtained a German Resident Permit will be able to work and stay only in Germany. But with an EU Blue Card, you will be able to work throughout Europe and Schengen Area. But if you are planning to stay for a longer period in Germany, it is ideal to apply for a German Residence permit.

EU Blue card

  • The EU Blue Card is a residential title and it has many benefits:
  • The card is awarded to non-European citizens and it grants them legal stay in Europe
  • It facilitates family reunification
  • It provides equal salary as well as working conditions for card holders.
  • The card holder can move freely in Schengen area. Schengen area means a collective zone of 26 countries that cover most of the European countries, except the UK and Ireland.
  • To be eligible to apply for a Blue Card,
  • An applicant must be a non-EU citizen
  • The applicant must possess impressive educational qualification and skills
  • The applicant must have received a job offer with a minimum annual gross salary of €49,600.
  • The blue card is usually issued for minimum period of one year and a maximum period of four years. However, the Blue Card’s term can be extended several times.

Courses like Engineering and Computer Science, which are popular among international students, also open doors to many job opportunities in Germany on completion. The students can acquire a post study work visa upon completion of their studies. With a few years of experience, they can land in a lucrative job in the country.

How to apply for a post-study work visa in Germany
  • In order to apply for a residence permit, you need to have a health insurance and a bank account. You need to submit financial bank statements along with the application for proving that you have enough financial resources to support yourself during your stay in Germany.
  • Now you need to fix an appointment at the local immigration office and fill out the application for residence permit.
  • On the date of appointment, you can meet the officer and submit the required documents. The processing of the application is completed within two or three weeks.

In order to apply for a residence permit for work after studies in Germany, one needs to submit the following documents.

  • A valid passport
  • A university degree
  • Healthcare insurance
  • Financial resources to fund your stay in Germany
Work in Germany after studies

After studies you may take up any of the following types of jobs in Germany.

  • Teaching/graduate assistant’s jobs: Research scholars may take up jobs as these. The work includes helping professors with marking copies, giving tutorials, preparing research literature, as well as working as supervisors and librarians.
  • International students can also take up English tutoring to German students. They can also give private tuitions, which will help them earn a decent amount of money.
