1,33,135 Indians went abroad for higher studies so far in 2022!

Indians going abroad for higher studies has become ‘commonplace’ nowadays. Many call it the great Indian brain drain or the human capital flight. While some call it the expedition to obtain a better education. However, through the lens of the students, factors like better lifestyle, healthcare, job opportunities, and world-class education, are the key reasons to study abroad.
PNP finder

1,33,135 students have landed abroad in countries like Canada, the UK, the US, etc., in 2022. These figures appear in just 3 months of this year. Comparing the year 2015-2016 and 2019-2020, the number of Indian students studying in Canada has increased by 350%.

So, what exactly do these numbers mean to students dreaming to study abroad? Why Indians students go abroad to study? Dive in, to read the statistics and introspect, why Indians are flocking abroad for higher studies.

The BIG fat stats about Indians!

In 2020, despite the pandemic, a total of 2,59,655 Indian students went abroad. The number went up to 4,44,553 in 2021, more than 1.5 times that of the previous year. Surprisingly, in 2022, about 1,33,135 Indian students left the country to study abroad in just 3 months. It is expected to touch a very high number in 2022, due to the ease of travel restrictions.

Another reason for the expected surge in numbers is that many students are about to resume their plans which were earlier paused due to the pandemic.

Key reasons why Indians study abroad

So, why Indians students go abroad to study at the first place? While experts argue on reasons like lack in the quality of the education system, inadequate job opportunities, poor talent recognition, etc.

From the students’ perspective, here are the key reasons why Indians study abroad:

Better education and course options

Pursuing higher studies abroad earns you a world-class education. Students now get the opportunity to choose courses with other offbeat subjects as combinations or minor subjects. This kind of flexible course option makes universities abroad more magnetic to students.

Among the top courses, Management and business courses are taken up by 35% of Indian students, Engineering by 18%, and Data Science & Analytics by 9%.

Ease of visa and travel restrictions

The way Indians went abroad for higher studies before is quite different than now! Now is the time when countries are easing many visa and travel restrictions, making it easier for Indian students.

In fact, Canada and the UK are closely working with the Indian government for the benefit of the students.

Stay back options & work permit

Stay back options that allow students to stay and work in the country after graduation has become the ‘best part’ of studying abroad. Countries like Canada and the UK, offer stay back options for 2 to 3 years depending on the course duration.

A work permit or Post Graduate Work Permit (PGWP) allows students to work after graduation. PGWP surely is a pathway to becoming a Permanent Resident as well.

Job opportunities

Studying abroad  increases the chances of employment both in India and overseas. Earning a degree from universities abroad is more of an added benefit.

Lack of job opportunities is now a living room conversation in India. That said, studying abroad is seen as a ‘superpower’ to earn a good job.

Benefits of studying abroad

  • An opportunity to obtain a world-class education
  • Experience a multicultural environment and people
  • Post graduate work permit (PGWP) options for 2 to 3 years
  • An effective pathway to get become Permanent Residents (PR)
  • Spouse can accompany with student by applying work permit
  • Work part-time while studying
  • Best healthcare facilities and social benefits
  • Exposure to the global economy and employment

Where are Indians heading?

In 2021, among the various education destinations, Indian students are more inclined to choose Canada, the UK, and the US.

Canada

The Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) the regulatory council of Canadian immigration highlights the increase in Indian students in Canada. The year, 2019-2020 saw a 350% increase in the number of Indian students than 2015-2016.

United Kingdom

The United Kingdom’s Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) has cited a 220% annual increase in enrollment of Indian students in British Universities. The UK for long has been the most preferred education destination of international students.

Moreover, UK’s new post-study work visa program for Indian students will lead to a spike in admissions. This route encourages students to stay back and work after graduation.

The USA

The US is the home of top-ranked universities. Despite all the reputation, the hype for the US is decreasing due to strict visa and travel restrictions. And the time for obtaining a green card is quite long, thus students take a back seat.

Rounding off!

To sum up, you learnt why Indians students go abroad to study. The Indian youths flocking to study abroad is seen as a sign of hope and passion. For many, overseas education is a dream come true. The three-month figure of 1.33 lakh students will skyrocket at the end of this year.

Studying or migrating abroad, it’s a decision of a lifetime. Only when we see new lands, people, cultures, and horizons, do we see the world from a different perspective. All the best for your higher education abroad.

Can I avail scholarships for my abroad study?

Of course! For many international students who feel studying abroad involves a lot of money, a scholarship is a ray of hope. Study abroad scholarships can come in different shapes and each scholarship needs certain eligibility requirements.

Here are the types of study abroad scholarships:

  • Merit-based scholarships

These scholarships are offered to students with exceptional academic scores such as a high percentage in secondary education (12th grade) or a high Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) in a bachelor’s degree.

  • Course-based scholarships

In universities abroad, scholarships are offered to students who select certain courses. Taking up such courses is an added advantage!

  • Country / Government specific scholarships

Almost all countries offer scholarships to students. However, the UK is known for providing exciting scholarships. Various countries take steps to encourage international students by providing scholarships outside the university.

  • Private scholarships

These are scholarships or financial assistance provided by third parties or private organizations. You can apply for these scholarships after you reach the university.

Are scholarships and bursaries the same?

No, they are not the same. Scholarships abroad do not pay your tuition fees in money, but they reduce the fees.
Whereas bursaries are provided as funds for financial assistance for your living expense or other academic expenses. However, you must apply for bursaries which cannot be availed without any application.

Can I avail multiple scholarships while studying abroad?

Well, not exactly. But you can apply for one university scholarship and other private scholarships, bursaries, and fellowships. By this, you can apply for multiple financial assistance but there are lesser chances of availing of study abroad scholarships.

Hope this blog post gave you insight on courses and scholarships while studying abroad. These answers to the most searched questions would have been a great eye-opener for you. Thank you for reading!

Can I study cross-major courses abroad?

It is advised not! Selecting a cross-major happens when you choose to study a course that is irrelevant to your field. For example, when you have completed Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, you are not advised to take Bachelor’s in Psychology.
This will affect you while you apply for a student visa abroad. To obtain Student Visa, you must submit a Statement of Purpose (SOP). An SOP must reason out your purpose of studying at the university and select the desired course. Selecting a cross-major could end up in visa rejection. However, you can get the help of overseas education experts to clear your doubts and get assistance in course selection.

Should I take a short-term course such as 8 months?

Short-term courses are usually certificate programs, and it seems ineffective for international students. Students can always opt for long-term courses of 2 years or at least 1 year. Because in countries like Canada, students cannot obtain a Post Graduate Work Permit (PGWP) with an 8-month course.
International students in Canada can obtain a PGWP by taking up an abroad study course of 1-year duration or more. Moreover, in Canada and the UK, as an international student, you can get stay-back options for the equivalent of or more than the duration of the study program. Hence, a long-term course is the best for international students.

Which is the best country to study Post Graduate Diploma (PGD) courses?

PGD courses are offered in popular student destinations like the USA, Canada, the UK, Australia, etc. However, Canada stands out from other countries when it comes to Post Graduate Diploma Courses due to its excellent academics, student life, and multiculturalism.
If you’re wondering what a PGD course is, here’s an insight! As the name suggests Post Graduate Diploma courses are taken up after a bachelor’s degree. These one-of-a-kind courses can be pursued to add skills and expertise in your niche subject.

Tip: Choose study programs that have a course duration of at least 8 months. However, opting for a minimum of 1-year or 2-year program is a cut above to obtain a Graduate Visa (in the UK) and PGWP (in Canada).

Country matters!

When it comes to knowing the best countries to study abroad, international students have an eye on countries like the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia. Though there are good universities in the USA for higher studies when it comes to tuition fees and student benefits, students take a back seat. Canada, the UK, and Australia are mostly preferred by international students.  Here are a few benefits of studying in the UK and Canada:

The UK

  • Higher standard of Education
  • Globally ranked universities
  • Post-study work opportunities
  • Work while studying options
  • Stay back options up to 2 years
  • Scholarships, bursaries, etc.
  • Study without IELTS*
  • Excellent research facilities

Note: *If you’re wondering “Can I study in the UK without IELTS?” Yes! You can study in the UK without IELTS in certain universities if you meet the following requirements:

  • The medium of instruction of your previous education and school must be English
  • You must have scored 75% marks in your 10th and 12th grade

However, you must check the specific university website regarding this.

Canada

  • Quality education system
  • Top-ranked universities
  • Cultural melting pot
  • Post-graduate work permit
  • Part-time job options
  • Effective path to obtain Canada PR
  • Multitude of job opportunities

Once you’ve learned about the countries and their benefits, now it’s time to set your target right!

Mind the Intakes!

There are 3 intakes you can choose from when you study abroad such as

  • Winter or January Intake
  • Summer or May intake
  • Spring/fall or September intake

Every intake has its own pros and cons, make sure to decide on it. September is one of the most popular intakes since all courses are open to students. Know more about the intakes here!

Take the IELTS!

International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is the most accepted test to prove your English proficiency to study in countries like Canada, the USA, the UK, and Australia. It has 4 bands namely Reading, Writing, Speaking, and Listening. You must score 6.5 in each band and above and not less than 6.

For applying to the universities/colleges, you must have a valid IELTS score. However, as stated earlier certain institutions in the UK accept applications and admission without an IELTS score.

Get into action!

Now that you’re all set, start applying to the universities in the country you’ve decided on. Search for the best universities abroad where your course is available. Here’s what you should look for:

  • Check the global rank of the college
  • Know about the academics and the college infrastructure
  • Check upon the facilities such as accommodation, libraries, etc.
  • In the case of Canadian universities, you must make sure to apply to DLI registered universities in Canada to be eligible for obtaining a Study Permit
  • Research the vicinity of the university/college, make sure it’s good for finding accommodation, transportation, etc.

Shortlist at least 2 to 3 colleges and start applying and wait till you receive an ‘acceptance letter’ from the institutions.

The application process can be quite unfamiliar to you and hard to decide on courses and courses. You can always get the service of overseas education experts of CanApprove to make your admission hassle-free!

Info bite: In the UK, it’s called a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) while in Canada it’s called a Letter of Acceptance (LOA).

Waiting game!

Now all you must do is nothing but wait. Universities take time to review your application, usually around 3 to 4 weeks to send you an Acceptance Letter. However, there are times when institutions send the Acceptance letter within a week. So, sit back and relax! Fingers crossed!

The big day!

And in a few weeks, you receive a mail named, ‘Acceptance Letter’ and it’s all about surprises and excitement. Pat yourself for going this far! Read the acceptance letter thoroughly and know all about the next step. Some universities ask you to pay a confirmation fee for your admission while other institutions ask you to pay partial or full tuition fees.

Once you’ve done with this, the next big step is obtaining a Study Visa.

Get that Study Visa stamped!

Only with an acceptance letter, you will be able to apply for a Study Visa. Obtaining a study visa involves:

  • Writing a Statement of Purpose (SOP), which highlights your intentions to study the desired course in the country. Only upon a satisfying SOP, will the visa authorities will issue you a study visa or student visa.
  • Medical Test is mandatory to enter other countries. While a general medical test is required for a Canadian student visa, a Tuberculosis (TB) test is a must for entering the UK.

Note: In the current situation in 2022, you must have taken the necessary Covid-19 vaccine shots to enter all foreign countries.

  • Biometrics will be the final step for obtaining your Study Visa

With all that said and done, you will get your passport stamped as Student Visa before traveling to your education destination. Now, it’s all about packing your bags!

Touch down in a new land!

The very first airport you land is where the Visa officers issue you a Study Permit which is valid for the duration of your study program with an additional 90 days in the case of Canada.

With all the anticipation, get there and make new friends at your university. Enjoy studying, explore the new land, experience new people, and make the best of your overseas education!

Academic Year

An academic year generally consists of semesters and trimesters in some universities. The academic year differs depending upon the intakes such as Spring (May), Fall (September) Winter (January). In the case of Fall intake (September), the academic year will span from September to June.

While scholarships are offered based on good academic performance, bursaries are provided to support the financial insufficiency of students.

Co-op programs

Unlike internships which come as paid and unpaid, these co-op programs offer you to work and earn, which is REALLY a great benefit for international students.

Community college

These types of colleges are similar to polytechnic colleges that offer diploma courses. Community colleges offer short-term programs, usually 2 years. For example, Saskatchewan Polytechnic in Canada is a community college.

Fellowship

Fellowship is different from a scholarship in a way that it need not provide financial assistance to students. It is a reward or assistance (maybe financial) offered for students to pursue research studies and is more of a status than a financial grant. Major

Major is a term denoting the core field of study you’re into. For example, in engineering, you can choose various majors such as Mechanical engineering, Civil engineering, Electrical engineering.

PGWP
