Canada has the Highest Proportion of College Graduates

According to the 2016 Canada Census, Canada has the highest proportion of college graduates compared with other OECD countries (developed nations). According to the data findings released on November 29th, this achievement is partly because of the recent immigrants, who are well educated.

Immigrants contribute to Canada’s economy by bringing their skills and high levels of educational attainment. In recent years, new programs have made it easier for international students who have completed their postsecondary education in Canada to immigrate into the country. Recent immigrants who landed in the five years prior to the 2016 Census were especially well-educated. The percentage of all immigrants with a master’s or doctorate degree is twice that of the Canadian-born population.

Express Entry System

According to the Census data, the percentage of immigrants among Canadian workers was 23.8 percent in 2016, while the percentage was 21.2 percent in 2006. The significant increase in immigrant workers is largely due to the changes introduced by the Canada government in the immigration system intending to address the labour shortage. One of the significant changes was the introduction of the Express Entry system in 2015.

Since January 2015, Canada has sent a total of 145,368 invitations to apply for permanent residence through various programs under the Express Entry system. Canada is further planning to welcome 250,000 newcomers through the Express Entry system as part of its plan to offer permanent residence to nearly one million immigrants between 2018 and 2020.

Immigrant population: Region-wise

Immigrants form 50 percent of the total workforce in Toronto, Ontario; Vancouver in British Columbia has the second highest proportion of immigrant workers in the labour force at 43.2 percent; and Calgary in Alberta has 32.5 percent immigrants in the workforce, which is the third highest proportion.

Scotland may introduce post-study visas for students

John Swinney, the deputy first minister of Scotland, has given a hint that Scotland is mulling on granting post-study visa to Indian students. During his visit to Delhi and Mumbai last week, Mr Swinney said that Scotland wanted to welcome more Indian students to Scottish institutions. “But for that, we need to make sure that they get to stay a bit longer after they finish their courses,” he was quoted by Economic Times.

The Scottish minister also expressed his concern over the strict post-study visa restrictions on Indian students in the UK. He said that earlier Scotland had many schemes that allowed international students, including those from India, to stay back after studies. They were allowed to start businesses. Now the Scottish government is thinking about re-introducing such schemes, according to the Mr Swinney.

The minister thinks that letting Indian students stay longer would benefit Scotland. He is of the opinion that British government’s strict post-study visa policies have to be replaced with a more pragmatic approach. He was accompanied by the representatives of 11 Scottish universities.

More than around 1300 Indian students are pursuing their studies in Scottish institutions currently. Scottish institutions offer a number of courses in various disciplines including science, humanities, law, medicine etc.

Mr Swinney believes that many Indian students have good entrepreneurial ideas but don’t have the resources to develop them further. Not allowing them to stay back in Scotland is depriving them the opportunity to take their ideas forward.

Scholarships for Indian students

During the visit, Mr Swinney also announced 20 scholarships for Indian students. The visit was part of the India higher education mission, a part of a mission called ‘Scotland’s universities welcome the world. The mission has allocated £1million on scholarship exclusively for Indian students. Those who win these scholarships can pursue their studies in MBA, big date, medical technologies and food/water in Scotland.

Canada the most attractive destination for international students

Canada is the most attractive study destination for international students, according to the ICEF-graduate Agent Barometer, an annual global education industry survey.

Among the factors that make Canada the most preferred destination for students are affordability, safety and work opportunities. Other decisive factors included study visa requirements, financial issues, safety and security concerns.

Canada offers a number of scholarships to eligible students and they can work off-campus while studying. Canada also provides a range of work opportunities to students, which helps them gain valuable experience in their respective fields during their studies. They also have job opportunities after their studies in Canada itself.

Besides, the country gives incentives to students who have completed their studies in Canadian colleges and universities to work and settle in Canada. The graduates are given an open work permit called Post Graduate Work Permit (PGWP), which is valid up to three years. The work experience gained this way is counted for permanent residence in programs including Canadian Experience Class, Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs), and the Quebec Experience Class.

The survey found a fall in students’ interest for destinations such as US and UK. But still, UK continues to be the best destination for English language studies and Foundation programs, and US for Management education.

Barometer Survey

The barometer survey is conducted among the education agents of more than 100 countries. It measures the relative attractiveness of international study destinations among students. The 2017 survey was conducted between September and October and collected responses from 1456 agents.
