CANADA EXPRESS ENTRY

What is Canada Express Entry program?
Canada Express Entry is an online immigration application management system used by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to identify and select skilled foreign nationals who have the potential to establish themselves economically in Canada. It is widely regarded as one of the fastest and most straightforward pathways for skilled workers from around the world to obtain Canadian Permanent Residence (PR).
How Does the Canada Express Entry System Work?
Regardless of which country you are applying from, the Express Entry process follows these steps:
1. Create an Express Entry Profile
2. Receive a CRS Score
3. Enter the Express Entry Pool
4. Receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA)
5. Submit your Permanent Residence Application
Programs Under the Canada Express Entry System
You can be eligible for the Express Entry pool through any of the following economic immigration programs:
1. Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP)
The FSWP is designed for skilled foreign workers with overseas work experience who wish to immigrate to Canada. To be eligible, you must:
- Have a minimum of 1 year of continuous full-time (or equivalent part-time) skilled work experience in the past 10 years
- Score at least 67 out of 100 points on the FSWP eligibility grid, which assesses language proficiency, education, work experience, age, arranged employment, and adaptability
- Meet minimum language requirements of CLB 7 in English or French
- Have your educational credentials assessed if obtained outside Canada
2. Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP)
The FSTP is designed for workers who are qualified in an eligible skilled trade and wish to become permanent residents of Canada. To be eligible, you must:
- Have at least 2 years of full-time work experience in a skilled trade within the last 5 years
- Have a valid job offer of at least 1 year OR a certificate of qualification issued by a Canadian provincial or territorial authority
- Meet minimum language requirements of CLB 4 for speaking and listening, and CLB 3 for reading and writing
3. Canadian Experience Class (CEC)
The CEC is designed for individuals who have already gained skilled work experience inside Canada and wish to transition to permanent residence. To be eligible, you must:
- Have a minimum of 1 year of full-time (or equivalent part-time) skilled Canadian work experience within the last 3 years
- Meet minimum language requirements of CLB 7 for TEER 0 or 1 occupations, or CLB 5 for TEER 2 or 3 occupations
- Work experience gained on a Post-Graduate Work Permit (PGWP) is eligible and counts toward the CEC requirements
4. Provincial Nominee Program – Enhanced Stream (PNP)
While not a standalone program, the Enhanced Stream of the Provincial Nominee Program is also managed through Express Entry. If a Canadian province or territory nominates you, you receive an additional 600 CRS points, which virtually guarantees an Invitation to Apply for PR. Each province has its own streams and eligibility criteria aligned with its local labour market needs.

Canada Express Entry Draws
IRCC conducts Express Entry draws approximately every two weeks, inviting the highest-ranked candidates from the pool to apply for Permanent Residence. Based on your CRS score, IRCC issues an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for Canadian PR.
Types of Express Entry Draws
Express Entry draws are conducted in three categories:
1. No Program Specified (General Draw)
IRCC invites the highest-ranked candidates from the entire Express Entry pool, regardless of which program they are eligible under — FSWP, FSTP, or CEC. Candidates with a provincial nomination are also included.
2. Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) Draw
IRCC targets candidates in the Express Entry pool who have already received a provincial nomination. A PNP nomination adds 600 CRS points to your score, virtually guaranteeing an ITA in the next available draw.
3. Category-Based Selection Draw
Introduced in 2023, category-based draws invite candidates who meet specific occupation or language criteria established by the Minister of Immigration to address Canada’s economic and labour market needs. To qualify for a category-based draw, you must:
- Be eligible under at least one Express Entry managed program
- Have a minimum of 6 months of continuous work experience in Canada or abroad within the past 3 years in an eligible occupation
- Meet all requirements outlined in the ministerial instructions for that draw round
Documents Required for the Express Entry Program
When submitting your PR application, you will typically need the following documents:
- Valid passport or travel document
- Birth certificate
- Language test results — IELTS or CELPIP (English) / TEF Canada or TCF Canada (French)
- Educational credentials and Educational Credential Assessment
- (ECA) for foreign degrees
- Employment reference letters from past and current employers
- Proof of funds (unless you have a valid Canadian job offer)
- Police clearance certificate
- Medical examination results from a designated IRCC physician
- Provincial nomination certificate (if applicable)
Note: Document requirements may vary based on your individual profile and the program you are applying under. Always refer to the official IRCC website for the complete and most current document checklist.
