What is Canada Express Entry program?

Programs Under the Canada Express Entry System

You can be eligible for the Express Entry pool through any of the following economic immigration programs:

1. Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP)

4. Provincial Nominee Program – Enhanced Stream (PNP)

While not a standalone program, the Enhanced Stream of the Provincial Nominee Program is also managed through Express Entry. If a Canadian province or territory nominates you, you receive an additional 600 CRS points, which virtually guarantees an Invitation to Apply for PR. Each province has its own streams and eligibility criteria aligned with its local labour market needs.

Express Entry Eligibility for Canada

To enter the Express Entry pool, you must be eligible under at least one of the following three federal immigration programs:

1. Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP)

Canada Express Entry Draws

IRCC conducts Express Entry draws approximately every two weeks, inviting the highest-ranked candidates from the pool to apply for Permanent Residence. Based on your CRS score, IRCC issues an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for Canadian PR.

Types of Express Entry Draws

Express Entry draws are conducted in three categories:

1. No Program Specified (General Draw)

IRCC invites the highest-ranked candidates from the entire Express Entry pool, regardless of which program they are eligible under — FSWP, FSTP, or CEC. Candidates with a provincial nomination are also included.

2. Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) Draw

IRCC targets candidates in the Express Entry pool who have already received a provincial nomination. A PNP nomination adds 600 CRS points to your score, virtually guaranteeing an ITA in the next available draw.

3. Category-Based Selection Draw

Introduced in 2023, category-based draws invite candidates who meet specific occupation or language criteria established by the Minister of Immigration to address Canada’s economic and labour market needs. To qualify for a category-based draw, you must:

  • Be eligible under at least one Express Entry managed program
  • Have a minimum of 6 months of continuous work experience in Canada or abroad within the past 3 years in an eligible occupation
