The Atlantic Canada province of Nova Scotia has set a new record in 2018 by approving the highest number of applications for immigration in a single year. Nova Scotia approved a total of 2272 applications in 2018, compared to the number of applications approved in 2017, which was only 1651. In 2019 too, Nova Scotia is all set to welcome more new permanent residents. Of the 2272 applications approved in 2018, a total of 1400 were accepted through the Nova Scotia Nominee Program (NSNP) and the remaining 872 through the Atlantic Immigration Pilot Program (AIPP).
Nova Scotia Nominee Program (NSNP)
Through the Nova Scotia Nominee Program (NSNP), the province nominates a set number of candidates for permanent residence in Canada each year. NSNP has three streams aligned to the federal Express Entry that allow NSNP to nominate eligible candidates from the federal Express Entry pool for permanent residence. These streams are–Nova Scotia Demand, Nova Scotia Experience, and Labour Market Priorities. Out of the total 1400 applications approved through NSNP, 1095 were accepted through these three streams.
Atlantic Immigration Pilot Program
Atlantic Immigration Pilot Program is operated jointly by the federal government of Canada and provincial governments of Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, and Newfoundland and Labrador. It allows designated employer of these provinces to hire eligible foreign workers to fill job vacancies that cannot be filled locally. A total of 716 businesses in Nova Scotia are designated under the Atlantic Immigration Pilot Program.
Immigration is a key factor in the population growth of Nova Scotia. In 2018, the province introduced two new streams–the Labor Market Priorities Stream and Physician Stream. The Labor Market Priorities Stream is aligned to the federal Express Entry and it allows the province to select candidates from the federal Express Entry pool for occupations facing a labor shortage in the province. The Physician Stream is meant for recruiting primary care doctors and specialists to the province.
