The number of Indian students studying in New Zealand universities witnessed a 28 percent rise in 2017, according to a recent report by the Times of India. The newspaper quoted the New Zealand High Commission which informed that the trend is continuing in 2018 too, with the year already witnessing a six percent hike in university enrolments and 24 percent overall growth in student visas.
The New Zealand High Commission is planning to conduct education fairs in Coimbatore, Cochin, Mumbai, and Vadodara to attract more Indian students to New Zealand. The fairs will introduce opportunities across 25 major institutions in New Zealand.
New Zealand is planning to launch a few initiatives to attract Indian students this year. New Zealand already has a scholarship program exclusively for Indian students. The scholarship, named New Zealand Excellence Award, is instituted jointly by Education New Zealand (ENZ) and eight New Zealand universities- AUT University, Lincoln University, Massey University, University of Auckland, University of Canterbury, University of Otago, University of Waikato, and Victoria University of Wellington. Under this scholarship scheme, 35 Indian students can pursue an undergraduate or postgraduate course in one of the eight universities in New Zealand. The scholarship is provided for the first year of study and the scholarship amount is NZD $5000. In order to be eligible for the scholarship, the student must have received an unconditional offer letter from one of the eight New Zealand universities.
