The new immigration minister of Canada, Marco Mendicino, has been assigned with major tasks including the implementation of the Canada’s increased annual Immigration Levels Plan for 2020-2022 and the new Municipal Nominee Program. The important tasks assigned to the Minister are outlined in the Mandate Letter sent to Mendicino, which was published by the government recently.
The tasks assigned to the minister are in line with the immigration policies of the Liberal Party, which were enacted during its first mandate. It also upholds the promises made by Liberals during their election campaign for a second term in the office.
If the recent developments are of any indication, the federal government will continue to increase the annual immigration levels by almost 10000 in 2022. That means the annual immigration target of Canada would be 41,000 in 2020, 350,000 in 2021, and around 360,000 in 2022.
Canada is spending more than any other country on the efforts to help new immigrants integrate well to the Canadian society in every sense. Now the government will study, based on data, whether these efforts have been successful in meeting their goals.
Another election promise of the Liberal government was the introduction of the Municipal Nominee Program, through which local communities, chambers of commerce and local labour councils will be allowed to sponsor immigrants directly. Around 5000 nominations are expected to be allocated for this program.
Further, the new government has plans to make the Atlantic Immigration Pilot program permanent. They are planning to allocate minimum 5000 new spaces for this program.
Moreover, the government has plans to waive the citizenship fees totally, in response to the feedback that Canadian citizenship application fee are too high. With this move, the government is planning to increase the number of immigrants obtaining citizens by around 40 per cent by 2024.
