The international students in Canada can work for more than 20 hours per week starting from November 15. This is a temporary arrangement and will be in effect till December 31, 2023. The Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) introduced this measure with an aim to address the gruelling labour shortage crisis in the country. The labour shortage is particularly high in job positions which are usually held by students, such as food services, retail and hospitality. However, no restrictions have been specified for occupations that could be chosen by students. The new measure would also benefit the 500,000 international students who are currently in Canada.
Canada education and migration
Canada sees international students as a valuable resource for future immigration, as they will be able to integrate to the Canadian labour market more quickly. Their education and work experience in Canada as well as high proficiency in English or French make it easier for them to obtain permanent residence status. Because of this reason, majority of the international graduates choose to settle in the country after their studies. Further, international students contribute to Canada’s economy through consumption of goods and services as well.
Canada has issued 452000 study permits between January and August 2022. As per the Immigration Levels Plan for 2023-25, Canada will be welcoming more than 500000 new permanent residents per year by 2025. It means more international students will get a chance to become permanent residents in the country.
Post-Graduate Work Permit (PGWP)
The Post-Graduate Work Permit allows international graduates to stay back in Canada after studies and work for a maximum of three years, depending on the duration of their course. Thus, PGWP allows them to gain significant Canadian work experience, with which they will be able to apply for permanent residence in Canada. Those who have gained work experience of at least one year with the PGWP may apply for permanent residence under the Express Entry program.
