APS Certificate Germany for Indian Students

For most Indian students planning to study in Germany, the APS certificate is one of the first real checkpoints on the road to admission, and skipping it isn’t an option. It verifies the authenticity of your academic records before a German university or visa office ever looks at your application, making it a mandatory step for nearly every Bachelor’s, Master’s, and diploma applicant. This page breaks down what the APS certificate is, who needs it, the documents required, and how long the process typically takes, so you know exactly what to prepare before you begin.
What is an APS Certificate for Germany?
An APS Certificate is a mandatory verification document issued by the Akademische Prüfstelle (Academic Evaluation Centre) that confirms the authenticity of an Indian student’s academic records before they apply to a German university. Without it, applications for admission or a German student visa simply cannot move forward.
Why is the APS Certificate Important to Study in German University Admissions?
The APS Certificate verifies that an applicant’s academic records are genuine, giving German universities and visa authorities a reliable way to trust a candidate’s qualifications without separately re-checking them. This speeds up both the admission and visa process, and since the certificate can be reused across multiple applications, students don’t need to repeat verification for each university.
Who Needs an APS Certificate for Germany?
Almost every Indian student applying for a bachelor’s, master’s, or diploma programme in Germany needs an APS Certificate, whether applying through uni-assist or directly to a university. A few exceptions exist: students with a German Abitur, those on German or EU-funded scholarships like DAAD, PhD applicants, and students with international qualifications like A-Levels or IB are generally exempt.

Step 6: Courier Your Documents

Step 7: Attend an Interview (If Applicable)
Students still completing their Bachelor’s degree may be called for a short verification interview, typically around 20 minutes.
Step 8: Receive Your APS Certificate
Once verification is complete, APS issues the certificate, usually within 3–4 weeks for Indian applicants, which can then be used across multiple university applications.
APS Certificate Processing Time and Validity
Processing Time
Indian applicants typically receive their APS certificate within 3–4 weeks, faster than most other countries in the APS system, though university or board verification delays can push this to 6–10+ weeks in some cases.
Validity
An APS Certificate is generally valid indefinitely once issued. APS India now issues certificates digitally as electronically signed PDF documents. The digital certificate should be kept in its original, unmodified form for submission to universities, uni-assist, VFS, or the German visa section.
Reusability
Once issued, the same certificate can be used across multiple university applications, so there’s no need to reapply for each one.
