WHATSAPPCanada has extended Open Work Permit Pilot for sponsored spouses and common law partners until July 31, 2020. Spouses and common law partners living in Canada and those who are in the process of applying for permanent residence in Canada through the Spouse or Common-Law Partner in Canada Class can apply for an open work permit under this program. Earlier, the Open Work Permit Pilot Program was set to be expired on January 31, 2019.
Open Work Permit Pilot
Under the Open Work Permit Pilot Program, spouses and common-law partners who meet the eligibility criteria can apply for an open work permit. They include a valid temporary resident status as a visitor, student or worker. The applicants must be living in Canada and must have been sponsored by Canadian citizens or permanent residents under the Spouse or Common-Law Partner in Canada Class (SCLPC). The applicant must be living at the same address of the sponsor.
Application process for Open Work Permit
The application for the open work permit must be submitted along with the application for permanent residence, at the time when application for sponsorship is submitted. But the candidates who have applied for permanent residence but are yet to apply for work permit can apply for the same separately.
Those who have received an in-principle approval for their permanent residence application from the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), which means they have been informed that they meet the eligibility criteria, but are yet to complete medical, security and background checks, can apply for open work permit online.
The candidates who have already obtained a work permit through the pilot program must apply for an extension of their permit before their current permit expires.
