Canada needs to welcome more immigrants, says Immigration Minister

new permanent residents

In the wake of the massive wave of retiring baby boomers, it has become absolutely vital for Canada to welcome more immigrants, including skilled workers through the Express Entry system, said Sean Fraser, the Immigration Minister of Canada. The other day he tweeted, “With five million Canadians set to retire by the end of the decade, the economic need for immigration is more important than ever.”

With an aim to tackle the severe labour shortage crisis being felt across provinces and industries in Canada, the country is planning to welcome a high number of immigrants in the coming years. Considering the current pace, Canada will be welcoming 449976 new permanent residents in 2022, far above the target set for the year, which is 431645. As per the Immigration Levels Plan for 2022-24, Canada will be welcoming 447055 new permanent residents in 2023 and 451000 of them in 2024.

Changes to Canada Express Entry 2022

One of the most prominent pathways through which new permanent residents will be admitted to the country is Express Entry. A number of changes are proposed for Express Entry in the coming days. Faster processing times, more invitations and targeted draws are just a few among these changes. With these changes, Canada is aiming to make it easier for skilled workers to migrate to Canada. The processing time for Express Entry applications will return to service standards of six months by July, the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada has informed. An internal IRCC memo has also indicated that the draw sizes will be similar to those held prior to the pandemic soon.

Welcoming new permanent residents

Prior to the pandemic, Canada used to issue an average of 3500 invitations  for new permanent residents in the Express Entry draws. Another major change is targeted Express Entry draws. Bill C-19 has introduced targeted draws, which would give the Immigration Minister of Canada the authority to invite candidates based on groupings, in a way to meet the economic goals of the country. So, the CRS requirement for these draws is likely to be way lesser.
