Increasing immigration crucial to the growth of Canadian economy, says BCC report

A study by the Business Council of Canada (BCC) has found that increasing immigration is crucial to the growth of Canadian economy. The study surveyed 80 Canadian businesses to find out how they utilized the immigration system of Canada to hire immigrant workers. Two-third of these companies said they depended on Canada immigration system to recruit workers from abroad. The remaining third hired immigrants who have already relocated to Canada.

Almost half of the businesses that took part in the survey are of the opinion that the Immigration Levels Plan for 2022-24 is not enough to meet the demand for economic immigrants. So they want the government to increase the number of immigrant workers being welcomed by the country every year. At the same time, they also want the government to increase housing and other infrastructure facilities such as childcare and healthcare for the new immigrants.

The employers also said they believed they had a role to play in helping newcomers settle in the country, in the form of providing language training and helping them obtain recognition of foreign credentials as well as assistance for relocation. Canadian businesses now expect that the competition for skilled immigrant workers will increase in the next few years.

As per the Immigration Levels Plan 2022-24 of Canada, the country will be welcoming 450000 new permanent residents by 2024. Immigrant workers can choose from a multitude of work permit and economic class immigration pathways to move to Canada. The country has job vacancy rates at all-time high. It is estimated that over nine million of the Canadian workers will hit the retirement age of 65 years by 2030. So Canada needs more immigrant workers to meet the labour market demands of the country.

Labour shortage crisis is widespread across the country. But it is particularly severe in provinces such as Ontario, Quebec and British Columbia. Among the industries, tech sector is one which is hit the hardest by the labour shortage crisis.
