Canada Visitor Record
Canada Visitor Record
A visitor record for Canada is an official document issued by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) that extends a visitor’s stay in Canada. A visitor record is not a visa.
A Visitor Record is a document that allows you to stay in Canada longer under the following circumstances:
- As a visitor.
- As a worker authorized to work without a work permit.
- As a student authorized to study without a study permit.
It includes a new expiry date, which is the date by which you must leave Canada.
Who Needs a Visitor Record:
In Canada, a visitor record is typically needed by people who want to extend their stay in the country beyond the initial period granted upon entry. Here’s a breakdown of who might need one:
- Visitors already in Canada: If you entered Canada as a visitor and want to stay longer than the authorized period (usually up to 6 months), you’ll need a visitor record to extend your legal status.
- People with specific work/study authorizations: If you came to Canada with a work or study permit that doesn’t allow full-time work or study, you might need a visitor record if you want to switch to visitor status or extend your stay for leisure purposes.
How to Apply for a Visitor Record:
There are two scenarios for applying for a Visitor Record:
1. Upon Arrival:
- If you know you want to stay longer than six months, inform the border services officer at the port of entry.
- They may issue you a Visitor Record at that time, or they might require you to submit a full application later.
2. Extending Your Stay:
If you’re already in Canada and decide to extend your stay, you can apply online through the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) website at least 30 days before your current authorized stay expires.
Documents Required for a Visitor Record:
The required documents for a Visitor Record application can vary, but generally include:
- A valid passport.
- Proof of travel and medical insurance.
- Proof of financial support for your stay in Canada.
- Detailed explanation of the reasons for your extension.
- A copy of your current immigration document (e.g., visa, eTA).
After You Apply for a Visitor Record:
Once your application is processed, you will receive one of the following:
- Approval: A visitor record document that specifies how long you can stay in Canada.
- Refusal: A letter explaining the reasons for the refusal and your options moving forward.
Processing Time for a Visitor Record:
The processing time for a Visitor Record application can vary depending on your situation and IRCC’s workload. It’s best to apply well in advance of your desired departure date.
Re-entering Canada with a Visitor Record:
A visitor record does not grant you re-entry into Canada. If you plan to leave and return, make sure you have a valid visa or Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) in addition to your visitor record.
