Statistics Canada reported that the population of Canada crossed the 37 million mark in the first four months of 2018. As per the new estimates Canada’s population, as on April 1, 2018, is 37,067,011. Immigration to Canada is attributed to be the major reason for this significant growth in population . In the first four months of 2018, Canada welcomed 79,951 newcomers compared to 72,795 in the previous year.
The report also observed that Canada’s population grew by one million in a record time. The population grew from 36 million to 37 million within just two years and two months. This is the quickest increase to have observed till date, according to the report.
Another significant phenomenon observed during this period was a fall in Canada’s natural population. Canada’s natural population increase in the first four months of 2018 was 15,037.This is a historic low, according to official data. Statistics Canada expects further decrease in the rate of natural increase in population, owing to several factors including population aging. Currently, the rate of natural increase in population is already in the negative in Atlantic provinces.
Conference Board of Canada, in a recent report, has estimated that the rate of immigration to Canada will have to be increased to one per cent of the population by 2030 in order to sustain the economic growth and population growth and also to ensure modest labour force.
As per the new multi-year immigration levels plan, Canada aims to increase the number of immigrants admitted to the country to 340,000 by 2020, at a rate of 0.9 per cent. For 2018, Canada’s admission target is 310,000(a rate of 0.84 per cent).
Inter-provincial migration is also influencing the demographic patterns in Canada with Ontario, Alberta and British Columbia experiencing net population gains. But Alberta is experiencing net losses in the past two years. The other provinces and territories that experienced net population losses are Newfoundland and Labrador, Prince Edward Island, Quebec, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Northwest Territories.
