Canada will accept 40,000 more immigrants in 2021 compared this year, announced Ahmed Hussen, the Immigration Minister of Canada, on October 31. The figures were revealed as part of the release of the updated multi-year immigration levels plan of Canada for the next three years. According to the immigration plan, the total number of immigrants to be accepted by Canada during the plan period will also rise to 350,000, which is almost one percent of the total population of Canada.
Priority will be given to economic immigrants, who will constitute 72 per cent of the total targeted immigrants, as the country is aiming to address the skills shortages and gaps in the labor market. According to the immigration minister, certain regions of the country are in dire need of economic immigrants to overcome the scarcity of workers. He further explained that the multi-year immigration plan 2021 is part of making the country competitive in the global market. The plan is expected to enable them to present Canada as a welcoming country and continue to attract skills, he said.
Immigration advocates and economic groups have been calling for a rise in the number of immigrants being admitted by Canada. In a report released in 2016, the economic advisory council of the Canadian government suggested admitting 450,000 new immigrants to the country.
However, Canada has adopted a measured approach in this matter, according to Minister Hussen. While welcoming more immigrants, Canada is also making sure that they receive suitable settlement services. The minister informed that after the liberals came to power, the funding for the settlement services had been raised by 30 per cent and this would have to be raised further. He also added that increasing the immigration plan 2021 numbers would be a gradual process, considering the time needed for processing immigration applications, capacity of the communities to absorb new immigrants and local immigration partnerships.
