Ontario wants to double the number of immigration candidates it can nominate for permanent residence by 2022. The province’s Immigration Minister Vic Fedeli has proposed the same in a letter written to his federal counterpart Marco Mendicino. Currently, the annual nomination allocation for Ontario is 6650. Ontario wants this to be increased to 13300 by 2022.
Provincial Nominee Programs
Canada PNP allows participating provinces and territories to nominate a set number of immigration candidates for permanent residence in the country. The number of nominations allocated by the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada(IRCC) to each province varies each year depending on the annual federal PNP admission targets. In 2019, Canada plans to admit 61000 new permanent residents through PNP. In 2018, the target was 55000. The admission target set for 2020 is 67800.
In the recent years, the Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program(OINP) has been receiving the largest nomination allocation among all Canadian provinces and territories. Though the annual allocation for Ontario was 6650 for 2019, an additional 700 nominations were granted to the province last week and now the total allocation has touched 7350.
The province has not revealed how the additional OINP nominations would be distributed among its nine immigration streams and three Express Entry-aligned streams. Neither the province has explained how the increased allocation would benefit the proposed Ontario Regional Immigration Pilot, which would be launched in early 2020.
Further, Ontario is also demanding more autonomy and control over the selection of immigrants to the country. Ontario’s demand to have greater control over immigration to province follows Saskatchewan’s demand for greater control over immigration to that province. Currently, only Quebec enjoys a more control over immigration to the province.
Canada PNP is increasingly becoming a prominent pathway for economic immigration to Canada. This is the best option for those candidates with low CRS scores and provincial nomination adds an additional 600 score points.
