The processing of applications for Canada immigration would return to normal standards by the end of the year 2022, said Sean Fraser, Canada’s minister for immigration. He assured that steps are being taken to bring immigration system back on track.
He pointed out that the delay in the processing of applications happened because of the pandemic. Many offices of Canada immigration had to be shut down. Further, as travel restrictions were in place and those who were overseas could not travel to Canada, Canada had to focus of transitioning temporary residents who had already been residing in the country to permanent residents. But overseas applicants continued to submit applications, which resulted in a huge backlog of immigration applications. Ever since the border restrictions were lifted, Canada has been focusing on bringing the application backlog down. As a result, the backlog could be reduced significantly, which would result in application processing time returning to normal standards.
Efforts to speed up application processing for Canada immigration
The Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has added 500 more staff in order to accelerate the processing of applications. An additional fund of $85 million and another $385 million is allocated in the budget for improving application processing standards. The minister said Canada needs more immigrants and Canada would be welcoming over 430000 immigrants annually from 2022 onwards.
Canada has already welcomed 200000 new permanent residents this year
The number of work permits issued by Canada has also increased by 250%. IRCC expects that it would be able to return to pre-pandemic service standards for processing Express Entry applications within six months beginning in July. As a result of reduction in backlog, Canada would also resume all-program Express Entry draws from July 6 onwards.
IRCC has announced that it would launch more case trackers to allow applicants review the status of their files digitally. According to the minister 17 lines of businesses will have case trackers by the end of summer.
