Data shows that Canada will welcome more than 29000 permanent residents through the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) in 2022. This far exceeds the target set in the Immigration Levels Plan 2022-24 for the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP). The actual target for the Program as per the Immigration Levels Plan was 25000. For the next year, the target is 28500.
But data from the past seven months show that Canada will be welcoming 29091 permanent residents under the PGP this year. It is even higher than the target set for next year. In January 2022, only 1300 permanent residents came to Canada through the Parents and Grandparents Program. In February, it was increased to 1680 and in March, the number was 2270. In April, 2403 permanent residents came to Canada through PGP and in June, the number was 3420.
The range of PGP set for the year is between 19000 and 31000. So, the expected number of newcomers under the program is still within this set range. In 2019, the first full year before the pandemic, the number of PGP immigrants settled in Canada was 22010. And this year, 7081 more candidates, 32.2 percent, will come to Canada under the program.
In 2021, Canada welcomed 11740 PGP immigrants. In the current year, the number will be more than twice higher, a growth of 147.8 per cent.
Parents and Grandparents Program
Parents and Grandparents Program has achieved unprecedented popularity among the Canada immigrants in the past few years. Canada increasing the target for the program shows the country’s commitment to uphold family reunification as a major aspect of its immigration policy. Parents/grandparents settling in Canada with the young immigrants who are their children/grandchildren, help and support the young immigrants in taking care of their children and managing the house, thus helping them to focus on their profession better.
