The Express Entry system of Canada is about to undergo a major change as starting in 2023, the Express Entry draws will begin to invite candidates based on some specific attributes such as work experience rather than CRS score. According to Canada’s Immigration Minister Sean Fraser, these changes would be enabling Canada to select immigrants who are already primed for economic success. However, the Canada Government has not revealed yet on when the targeted draws will begin. But it is known that the Immigration Minister would be holding discussions with provinces, business councils and other stakeholders to evaluate which candidates to target. As the immigration minister has got more authority over these matters, it is expected that the candidates will be selected on the basis of the most pressing economic needs as well as urgent labour shortages.
Labour shortage in Canada’s healthcare system
The healthcare sector of Canada, which is currently reeling under a severe labour shortage, is expected to greatly benefit from this expected change in Express Entry draws. Besides, the government is taking some serious measures to fill the vacancies in this sector. One among this is removing some barriers for internationally trained physicians, who are already in Canada. Canada has also announced the Foreign Credential Recognition Program that would allow more foreign trained healthcare professionals to enter Canada’s workforce.
Why is Canada Express Entry system changing?
Canada is changing the Express Entry system so that it will cater to the changing labour market needs of the country. Canada has a labour shortage crisis, which is going to intensify in the coming years, owing to aging population and low birth rate. Further, around nine million Canadians are expected to hit the retirement age by 2030. It will create a huge number of job vacancies. So Canada is seeing immigration as a solution for its labour and demographic needs. This is the major reason why Canada is revamping the Express Entry system.
