Demand is high for skilled workers in Australia, shows a recent report released by Deloitte. According to the report titled “The path to prosperity: Why the future of work is human”, many jobs remain unfilled in Australia as employers are unable to find workers with required skills. Nearly 243,200 jobs lay vacant in May 2019, the report points out. It means an increase of 0.3% in vacant jobs as compared to February 2019.
Australia’s Department of Employment, Skills, Small, and Family Business regularly does research to recognize skill shortages in various sectors. Based on this research, the Department releases the list of occupations that face shortage of skills at national, state and regional levels. According to the latest report of the Department, the major occupations that face skill shortage are motor mechanics, electricians, civil, mechanical and electrical engineers, bakers, chefs, cooks, butchers, mechanists, aircraft maintenance engineers, metal fitters, speech therapists, optometrists, sonographers, teachers and nurses.
Australia Government updates the Australia Skilled Occupation List (SOL List) on a regular basis in response to the skill shortage across various occupations. The Skilled Occupation List of Australia is divided into Medium and Long-Term Skill Shortage List, Short Term Skill Shortage List and Regional Occupation List. The Immigration Department of Australia invites foreign skilled workers according to the occupational ceiling set for each occupation. The occupational ceilings for some of the most popular jobs for foreign skilled workers in Australia are:
Registered Nurses | 17,509 |
Software and Applications Programmers | 8748 |
