Canada may soon overtake UK as the second most popular study abroad destination, according to the 2018 edition of the QS Applicant Survey. Currently, US remains the most popular study abroad destination with 42% students from around the world still preferring the country. The UK has the second place with 34% students preferring to study there. Canada has the third place with 33% international students preferring the country. Though Canada has the third place, it is the first preference among international students in certain specific regions, especially the Middle East.
Experts see the increased preference for Canada as a reaction to the political shifts in the US and the UK. While the US has tightened the immigration rules under president Donald Trump, the UK’s decision to leave the European Union has affected its popularity among international students. The students are concerned about how the ‘Brexit’ will restrict their freedom of movement in Europe.
In the year 2016-2017, there was a 17 percent drop in the number of study permits issued by the US. On the other hand, there was around 11 percent increase in the number of international students choosing Canada.
In Canada, it is easier for international students become permanent residents. After studies, they become eligible for Post Graduation Work Permit. Canadian education and work experience will be added advantages while applying for permanent residence in Canada.
The international students also get extra Comprehensive Ranking System points. They get 30 points if they complete the three year post-secondary, master’s, professional degrees or doctorate. The post-secondary diploma students also get extra 15 CRS points. All these give an extra edge for international students while applying for permanent residence in Canada.
