How to obtain Canada citizenship?

One advantage of obtaining Canada citizenship is that you can hold one of the strongest passports in the world and travel to many countries visa-free. Once you become a permanent resident in Canada, you can obtain Canada citizenship if you meet certain requirements. These include:

  • Be a permanent resident of Canada
  • Have lived in Canada for 3 out of the last 5 years
  • Have filed your taxes
  • Have passed the citizenship test
  • Have proven your language skills

Advantages of becoming a Canadian citizen

Although a Canadian permanent resident enjoys almost all the rights and privileges of a Canadian citizen, the Canadian citizens enjoy a few more advantages. These include:

The right to vote and run for office: A Canadian citizen, unlike the permanent resident, may vote in elections and even run for a political office.

Better job opportunities: Certain jobs in Canada, especially those which require security clearance, are set aside only for Canadian citizens. So, becoming a Canadian citizen means getting more job opportunities.

Need not renew visa: If you are a permanent resident, you need to renew your visa in every five years. But the validity of a Citizenship Certificate is indefinite.

Citizenship for your children: Children born to Canadian citizens automatically become Canadian citizens. So they need not go through the application process for citizenship.

Almost 86% of Canadian permanent residents become citizens, which is one of the highest rates among western countries. Studies have shown that becoming a citizen improves the economic opportunities of immigrants.
