Canada will invite 23100 potential sponsors under the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) for the year 2022, it has been announced. The Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has made clear that this number is enough to accept up to 15000 complete applications targeted under PGP 2022. The IRCC will start issuing invitations later this week.
The candidates will be selected from those who expressed their interest to sponsor their parents and grandparents in autumn 2020. According to the IRCC, around 155000 potential sponsors are remaining in the pool. In 2020, IRCC gave three weeks for the potential sponsors to indicate their interest to sponsor by completing a form on IRCC’s website. It was followed by a lottery in which, the IRCC accepted around 10000 applications. Last year, the IRCC drew from the same pool around 30000 applications for PGP 2021.
Canada PGP: Eligibility for sponsors
To be eligible to become a sponsor under the Parents and Grandparents Program 2022, you must meet the following criteria:
-Submit an interest to sponsor form on IRCC’s website
-You must have submitted the form between 12 PM ET on October 13, 2020 and and 12 PM ET on November 3, 2020
-You must be at least 18 years old
-You must be residing in Canada
-You must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident
-You must have the financial capacity to support the people you intend to sponsor.
Minimum Necessary Income in Parents and Grandparents Program
Minimum Necessary Income or MNI is a major eligibility factor as far as Parents and Grandparents Program is concerned. However, potential sponsors need to submit this proof only after they express their interest through the online form. Their application will be refused if they do not meet this requirement. Sponsors and their co-signers need to provide Notices of Assessment form the Canada Revenue Agency for each of the taxation year preceding the date of application.
Taking into consideration the loss of income during the pandemic period, IRCC lowered the MNI requirement for both the years 2021 and 2020 by 30 per cent. In addition, IRCC is allowing regular Employment Insurance benefits and temporary COVID-19 benefits (such as the Canada Emergency Response Benefit) to be counted toward a sponsor’s income.
Canada Super Visa
For those who are unable to sponsor their parents and grandparents through PGP, there is another option, which is the Canada Super Visa. The Super Visa is valid for 10 years. Parents and grandparents with this visa can stay in Canada for a maximum of 5 years without exiting.
