The Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will accept a record number of applications for the 2021 Parents and Grandparents Program(PGP), announced Marco Mendicino, the Immigration Minister of Canada, the other day. The IRCC will invite up to 30000 potential sponsors who have already submitted an interest to sponsor form in 2020. The invitations will be issued over the course of two weeks starting from September 20, 2021.
The Parents and Grandparents Program of Canada gives an opportunity for Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor their parents or grandparents for permanent residence in Canada. Those who receive invitations to apply for Parents and Grandparents Program will be able to use the new Permanent Resident Digital Intake tool of the IRCC through which, the applications can be submitted electronically. The tool has been introduced by the IRCC as part of modernizing Canada’s immigration system, with an aim to speed up and simplify the application process. The candidates who receive the invitation may submit the complete application within 60 days.
Eligibility criteria
Those who wish to sponsor their parents and grandparents for permanent residence in Canada must meet certain eligibility criteria. The applicants must be above the age of 18 years. They should either be Canadian citizens or permanent residents. They should also demonstrate financial ability support the family member they are sponsoring.
Minimum Necessary Income
The Minimum Necessary Income(MNI) is a key eligibility factor for the PGP. For 2021 Parents and Grandparents Program, the sponsor’s MNI for the years 2020, 2019 and 2018 tax years will be assessed. The application of those who have failed to meet the MNI requirement will be refused.
Considering the fact that the pandemic has affected the financial condition of many families, the IRCC has retained the income requirement as minimum necessary income instead of the minimum necessary income plus 30% as it was earlier. Regular Employment Insurance benefits and temporary COVID-19 benefits will be allowed to be included in the sponsor’s income assessment.
Interested sponsors also need to submit a signed undertaking to the IRCC, saying that they will be financially responsible for the family member they sponsor for 20 years.
