The use of South Asian languages in Canada now has Hindi, Malayalam, Gujarati and Punjabi is on the rise in Canada while the use of European languages is coming down, shows a report by Statistics Canada. Owing to immigration, the use of South Asian languages like Gujarati, Punjabi, Hindi and Malayalam has increased significantly during the period between 2016 and 2021, shows their data. The growth rate in the number of people speaking these languages was eight times larger than that of overall Canadian population during this period. However, the number of people speaking European languages like Italian, Polish and Greek has come down.
Immigration to Canada from India, China
Of the languages in Canada, the major reason pointed out for this increase in the number of people speaking south Asian languages is that India and China are the most prominent source countries for immigration to Canada. In the current year, until June, India welcomed a total of 68280 new immigrants, which is the highest among the source countries. China came second with 16540 new immigrants moving to Canada during this period. According to Statistics Canada, 955685 Canadian residents speak Chinese languages at home. The other major source countries for immigrants to Canada are Philippines, Afghanistan, Nigeria, Iran, France, USA, Pakistan and Brazil.
Other increasing languages in Canada – English, French
The rise in immigration has also led to an increase in the number of people speaking official languages of Canada, which are English and French. These two languages remain the most commonly spoken languages in Canada. More than nine in 10 Canadians speak one of these languages at home, at least on a regular basis, according to Statistics Canada. One in four Canadians, which means nine million people, had their mother tongue other than English or French. This is a record since 1901, when the question of mother tongue was first added to the Census.
The multi-cultural nature of Canadian society is one of the major reasons why it remains a popular destination for immigration.
