New border measures came into effect in Canada

Canada Immigration

The relaxed border measures announced by Canada recently came to effect on February 28. So, international travellers can enter the country with a pre-arrival antigen test. Earlier, international travellers were required to undergo a molecular test such as a PCR test to enter Canada and that had to be taken within 72 hours before arriving in Canada. Canada has also informed that international flights would resume at all airports.
Further, the travellers are still required to upload all the necessary information on ArriveCAN app. Using either desktop app or mobile app, they can upload their proof of vaccination.

COVID test for travelling to Canada

As per the new rules, all travellers above the age of five need to take a COVID-19 test before crossing the border. The antigen test needs to be taken within one day before arriving at the border. However, Canada has specified that the tests taken at home will not be acceptable. But it has to be taken at a laboratory, healthcare entity or tele-health service. The test is also required to be authorised by the country in which it was purchased. Furthermore, Canada still accepts PCR tests and the rules remain the same.

The travelers who continue to test positive even after recovering from COVID-19 may still board the plane to Canada, provided they meet certain conditions. They have to provide a positive COVID-19 molecular test on a specimen collected at least 10 days and not more than 180 days before entering Canada.

Quarantine rules for international travellers

Travellers who are not fully vaccinated as well as unvaccinated travellers will have to undergo 14-days quarantine. They also need to take mandatory COVID test upon arrival as well as on day 8. Fully vaccinated travelers will be exempted from quarantine requirements in Canada, provided they meet the following conditions:

  • Meet pre-entry testing requirements
  • Have no symptoms
  • Submit all required COVID-19 information to ArriveCAN app and present their ArriveCAN receipt, pre-departure test results
  • Provide proof of vaccination documents before boarding the flight to Canada.
  • Have a suitable quarantine plan if they are not eligible for the exemption.

Random COVID test for travellers to Canada

From the international travellers who arrive in Canada, border security officials will randomly select persons for mandatory arrival test. You may have to get the test done at the airport or the officials would provide you a self-swab kit with which you have to complete the test within 24 hours. However, you need not remain in quarantine till you receive the results, but may travel to your final destination and take connecting flights.

Traveling with children to Canada

Children under the age of 12 years of age who are unvaccinated or not fully vaccinated and travelling with fully vaccinated or medically exempt adults, will be exempt from quarantine. Neither do they have to wait for 14 days before attending school, camp or daycare. Children would also be subjected to random testing upon arriving in Canada. But they will not have to quarantine till the results arrive.
