The Alberta Advantage Immigration Program or AAIP has added having relatives in the province to the selection criteria for candidates under the Alberta Express Entry stream. It means candidates who have their close family members like parent, child, brother or sister residing in Alberta as permanent resident will have more chance for receiving a Notification of Interest (NOI) from the AAIP. However, the candidate must have provided this information in their Express Entry profile. Alberta believes having close relatives in the province will help new immigrants establish themselves easily in the province. With this change, Alberta will now be able to allocate 25% of their NOIs to those candidates who have immediate family members in Alberta and have experience in one of the in-demand occupations of the province.
Demand for foreign skilled workers in Alberta
The AAIP allows employers to address the labour shortage crisis in the province by hiring foreign workers. The province is now witnessing massive growth in the number of job vacancies. In December 2022 alone, around 41000 new jobs were added in the private sector of the province. Alberta also has around 100,000 vacant job positions and a shortage of over 33000 workers. This is one major reason why the province is making special efforts to attract more immigrant workers.
Alberta Express Entry stream
The Express Entry stream of Alberta is aligned to the federal Express Entry system of Canada. Under this stream, the province selects eligible candidates from the Express Entry pool and issues them Notifications of Interest. Those who have received these Notifications of Interest may apply for provincial nomination from Alberta.
In order to receive a Notification of Interest(NOI) from AAIP under the Alberta Express Entry stream, a candidate must meet the following requirements:
- An active Express Entry profile, preferably with more than 5 months of validity.
- Stated their interest to settle in Alberta in the Express Entry profile.
- Work experience in an in-demand occupation of Alberta
- Minimum CRS score of 300.
