Ontario to add thousands of foreign-trained nurses to healthcare workforce

Ontario is planning to add thousands of foreign-trained nurses to its healthcare workforce by March 31. Around 300 of these newly recruited nurses would be assigned to serve at 50 high-need hospitals in the province. They will be allowed to work in these hospitals under supervision even while continuing the procedures to obtain their license in Ontario. By the end of March, Ontario would be needing around 6000 new healthcare workers in its hospitals. Nursing students, medical students and other students in the field of healthcare will also be inducted to the workforce to fill the vacancies. Currently, more than 1200 foreign-trained nurses have applied to the College of Nurses of Ontario and expressed their interest in these initiatives.

Ontario, just like the rest of Canada, has been experiencing severe shortage of nurses ever since the outbreak of the pandemic. Since March 2020, Ontario has added 6700 more healthcare workers to work in long-term care homes and other care settings with an aim to reduce the burden on hospitals.

Over the next five years, Ontario will be investing $342 million to the recruitment initiatives in its 2021 Ontario Economic Outlook and Fiscal Review: Build Ontario. With this more than 13000 workers will be added to the healthcare sector of Ontario. These workers will include more than 5000 nurses and 8000 personal support workers.

“The pandemic has highlighted the need for more staff on the front lines of our health care system. Our government committed to spare no expense in the fight against the pandemic to protect people’s health and the economy, which is why investing in the front lines of our health care system was one of the key pillars of our plan to Build Ontario,” said Peter Bethlenfalvy, Minister of Finance, Ontario, in a press release recently.

Ontario is the most populous province in Canada and a favourite destination for newcomers to settle down. It has a strong economy and numerous job opportunities.

Pandemic has increased the demand for healthcare workers in Ontario as well as in other provinces and territories of Canada.
