Ontario records highest employment gains and 2nd lowest unemployment rate

In 2018, Ontario led Canadian provinces and territories in terms of employment gains, according to data provided by Statistics Canada. The number of people employed in Ontario grew by 78000 and all of these were full-time employment. The unemployment rate of the province also dropped to 5.4 percent, the second lowest unemployment rate among Canadian provinces.
The province to post the lowest unemployment rate in 2018, a year when unemployment dropped to the lowest level since 1976 was British Columbia, at 4.4 percent. The number of people employed grew by 44,000 in British Columbia, with most of them being employed full-time. The employment growth rate was 1.8 percent, which is double the national average.
Another province which had employment growth rate above the national average in 2018 was Saskatchewan. A total of 11000 people got placed in the year and the employment growth rate was 1.9 percent. The unemployment rate of the province also fell by 0.9 percentage points, to 5.6 per cent.
Canada’s overall unemployment rate in 2018 was also 5.6 per cent, the same as Saskatchewan. This rate is the lowest recorded in Canada since 1976. Employment grew by 163,000, at a growth rate of 0.9 percent and all these were full-time employment. This remarkable employment growth rate was almost entirely driven by service industries such as healthcare and social assistance. These industries marked employment gains of 74000. These were followed by business, building and other support services with 59000.
In November 2018, the monthly Labor Force Survey of Statistics Canada found that the unemployment rate of Canada reached a record low. At an unemployment rate of 5.6 percent, nearly 19 million people were found to be employed in the country. The provinces Quebec and Alberta saw the biggest drop in unemployment rate in November 2018.
