The Immigration Ministry of Quebec has announced that it could admit upto 44500 new permanent residents and issue 24700 new selection certificates in 2020. Majority of these admissions, almost 59 percent, are expected to come through the Quebec Skilled Worker Program (QSWP) and other economic immigration programs of the province.
The increase is part of implementing the Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ) government’s promise to progressively increase the immigration levels to the province. The number of immigrants proposed for the next year is 44500, which is 2700 more than the total target set for the current year– 41800 newcomers. Earlier, the Quebec government had cut down the immigration levels by almost 20 percent.
The CAQ clarified that the reduction had been introduced with an aim to ensure the proper integration of newcomers to Quebec society. But Quebec will return to the earlier immigration levels of 50000 by 2022, according to Simon Jolin-Barrette, the Immigration Minister of Quebec.
In 2020, Quebec is set to welcome between 25000 and 26300 new admissions through its economic immigration programs. Out of these, maximum 22000 admissions would be skilled workers. The maximum number of admissions through its business immigration programs–Quebec Entrepreneur Program and Quebec Self Employed Worker Program–would be 3600. Other economic immigration programs such as caregivers would have a maximum of 700 new admissions. The remaining 18200 new permanent residents will come to Quebec through family sponsorship, refugee and other immigration programs.
Quebec plans to issue between 20100 and 24700 selection certificates in 2020, which is slightly less than its target for 2019– between 20200 to 24800. A majority of these CSQs, up to 15000, would go to skilled workers.
The targets are as follows:
Category | Target |
---|---|
Skilled workers | 12,500 to 15,000 |
Business people | 2,100 to 2,800 |
Other economic categories | 600 to 800 |
Refugees (overseas) | 4,500 to 5,500 |
Other immigrants | 400 to 600 |
