The Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has informed that the intake for Parents and Grandparents Program 2020 intake will take place between October 13 and November 3. The Program allows citizens and permanent residents to sponsor their parents and grandparents to immigrate to Canada.
The Immigration Department of Canada has informed that the Program will be open to accept interest to sponsor forms between 12:00 p.m. EDT on October 13 and 12:00 p.m. EDT on November 3. From the interest to sponsor forms submitted during this period, the IRCC will select potential sponsors randomly and invite them to submit an application. The application has to be submitted within 60 days from the date of receiving invitation. The PGP Program reopening was supposed to take place earlier this year, but was put off owing to coronavirus pandemic.
In 2020, the IRCC is planning to accept a maximum of 10000 applications under the PGP program. The target is 30000 applications in 2021.
In the wake of coronavirus pandemic, IRCC is also introducing a temporary foreign policy where the income requirement for the 2020 tax year will be minimum necessary income. Earlier, the income requirement was minimum necessary income plus 30 per cent. The aim of bringing down income requirement is to accommodate those whose income has been affected by the coronavirus pandemic.
Parents and Grandparents Program: Eligibility criteria for sponsors
- The person must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident
- Must be above the age of 18 years
- Must have financial capacity to support the sponsored family member for at least 20 years after they become permanent resident. In Quebec, it is 10 years and the income of the sponsor is also assessed here.
- The sponsor needs to sign an undertaking with the government that they will provide for the basic needs of the sponsored person and that the sponsored person will make every effort to support themselves.
Parents and Grandparents Program: Eligibility criteria for the sponsored
- The person who wishes to be sponsored must be biological or adopted parents or grandparents of the potential sponsor
- If the applicant wants to sponsor a couple, he/she need to meet income requirements for everyone on the application as well as their dependents.
- The person who is to be sponsored needs to provide all the necessary documents as well as additional information such as medical exams, police clearance and biometrics
