Efforts are on to make the entire Canada immigration process online and the initiative aims to attract more immigrants to the country, said Canada’s Immigration Minister Marco Mendicino. According to the minister, Canada is already ahead of other immigration destination countries in putting its immigration processes online.
In an interview, the minister was reported as saying, “In a world that is increasingly going virtual, we are leading the way, especially when it comes to our immigration system.” He further said, “We are the only ones that have moved our citizenship ceremony online, to my knowledge, and now we are also moving into the digital space when it comes to testing applicants.”
Mendicino pointed out that Canada has been able to use the Express Entry system and make the best use of its online services to help newcomers settle in Canada, by getting them the skills, services and supports they need prior to arrival.
Canada immigration targets
Canada’s immigration levels have come down drastically owing to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the country is planning to increase its immigration targets by welcoming more immigrants. The immigration target for 2021-2023 period is set at 1.2 million. The target for 2021 is 401000, for 2022 it is 411000 and for the year 2023, the target is 421000.
In the interview, Mendicino reiterated Canada’s commitment to immigration. “When I tabled the immigration plan a little while ago, we could have put a pause, we could have reversed, we could have cut immigration but I believe, I firmly believe and our government believes that through immigration we will continue to grow,” he said.
“I am confident that we can hit the levels that we have set … I’m confident because we are innovating at quantum speed … We have created new polices that will allow people into the country but in a manner that is safe,” he added.
Temporary workers, international students
In the wake of border closures owing to the spread of COVID-19, Canada looked for other ways to source permanent residents. Among them are temporary foreign workers already residing in Canada.
Another group is international students. Canada is increasingly encouraging internationals students to stay back in Canada after their studies. “These are among the best and brightest who are the early stages of their lives and have chosen Canada to come and take part in an education,” the immigration minister said. “They are very much looking forward to staying and contributing. I think we have an opportunity to move forward and hit some of those buttons. We have revived pathways to enable them to come back to Canada,” said Mendicino.
