With an aim to revamp the immigration system of Manitoba, the province is setting up an advisory council. The Council is entrusted with the task of seeking ways to attract more international immigrants to settle in the province and more international students to study in its higher education institutions. The Council will also advice the provincial government on ways to make Manitoba a dynamic destination for immigration and business investors.
The Council is being co-chaired by Immigration Minister Jon Reyes and Dr Lloyd Axworthy, a former foreign affairs minister of Canada, ex-chancellor of the University of Winnipeg and chairperson of the World Refugee and Migration Council. The Council will review the entire continuum of immigration policies and practices of Manitoba and provide clear recommendations and concrete actions to the provincial government.
The Council will take steps to address the labour shortages in Manitoba through effective immigration practices. More immigrants are needed to resolve the labour shortages in Manitoba. The province needs workers with specific skills to meet the labour demand of different sectors. “The advisory council will be reviewing the current Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program criteria and offer suggestions to help streamline processes to get people to Manitoba and have them join the workforce and their communities as soon as possible,” according to Manitoba Premier Heather Stefanson.
As per the data from the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada or the IRCC, a total of 16560 newcomers settled permanently in Manitoba in 2021, which means 4.1 per cent of the total immigrants who became permanent residents in Canada last year. Among these immigrants, almost 77.4 per cent arrived through economic immigration programs. 10315 newcomers moved to Manitoba through Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program in 2021. At the same time, 2330 came to the province through Family Sponsorship Program.
