Manitoba invests $4 million in immigrant settlement services

immigrant settlement

The Canadian province of Manitoba will be investing $4 million more for funding the settlement programs for newcomers. About this investment, Manitoba’s Immigration Minister Jon Reyes said, “Thousands of newcomers settle in Manitoba every year from around the world and the diverse array of knowledge, skills, and experiences they bring with them advances our province’s economic prosperity and enriches the vibrancy of our communities. Expanding the settlement services available to newcomers empowers them to more fully and successfully integrate in their new communities sooner, which has been shown to bolster immigrant retention rates.”Canada pnp finderAs per the latest Statistics Canada report, the five-year immigration retention rate of Manitoba for immigrants was 67.7 percent. But when compared to provinces such as Ontario, where the retention rate is 92 percent, this is much low. That is why Manitoba decided to invest more in improving immigrant settlement services that would help the newcomers integrate well into Canadian society, both socially and economically. The amount earmarked now is almost double compared to what was spent by the province for the same purpose last year. The minister said, “It’s my hope that this expanded funding will enable new and innovative projects to benefit. (These programs) will assist newcomers in building strong ties to their new communities, enabling them to build and utilize the valuable skills they bring to Manitoba.”

The fund will be disbursed to the following organizations:

  • Service-provider organizations offering services for newcomers
  • Established non-profit organizations and community groups
  • Direct service/program providers.

In 2022, until November, the province welcomed 20420 new permanent residents, as per the data revealed by the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada(IRCC). This is 18 per cent more compared to 18870 immigrants who came to Manitoba in 2019. In 2021, the year hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic, the province welcomed 16575 new immigrants. In 2020, another year severely affected by COVID-19, Manitoba received only 8610.

Most of the immigrants come to Manitoba through the Provincial Nominee Program(PNP). Last year, a total of 14340 immigrants came to Canada through PNP. 2793 immigrants came through Family Sponsorship programs.
