Australia to welcome 195000 new immigrants during 2022-23

Australia Welcome New Immigrants

During the Federal Budget, the Australian government unveiled its plan for immigration for the 2022-23 period. During this period, a total of 195000 immigrants will be admitted to Canada as permanent residents. Parent visas will also be increased to 8500 compared to 4500 in the 2021-22 period. International students will have their work restrictions relaxed until 30 June 2023, so that they would be able to work additional hours. There will be no ceiling on visas for partners and children. The Budget has also set aside additional funding to expedite visa processing, resolve the visa backlog and promote opportunities for high-skilled migrants.

Skilled migration to Australia

Over 90 per cent of the 195000 new immigrants to be admitted to Australia during the 2022-23 period will be skilled migrants.  The government has decided to spend an additional $42.2 million for addressing the skill shortages in the country, by accelerating visa processing, reducing visa backlog and spreading awareness about high-skilled migration programs. The government will also provide $576 million in the coming four years for maintaining offshore processing centres and supporting refugees.

State-nominated migration to Australia

The number of visas allotted for states and territories, especially the skilled nominated visas (subclass 190) and skilled work regional visas(subclass 491) has also been increased for the 2022-23 skilled migration program. Visa allocations in the skilled nominated subclass have doubled with over 30000 places compared to last year.

Migrate to Australia

All these data indicate that this is a good time for temporary visa holders residing in Australia, as well as offshore candidates to avail the opportunities for nominations from Australian states.

Further, the state of Victoria has revoked an obligation that the candidates applying for PR through skilled migration must work in their nominated occupation. This has eased the eligibility for registering interest. However, as this is just an interim allocation, more changes are likely to follow. As the Australian government is making serious efforts to tackle the labour shortage crisis, they are also considering the lifting of annual cap on migration.

Australia is planning to address the labour shortage crisis by allowing more immigrants to come to the country and by providing temporary visa holders a pathway to permanent residency.
