Canada heading strongly towards achieving its immigration goals for 2022

Canada presented strong performances in terms of the number of newcomers admitted in the first two months of the year 2022, indicating that Canada is strongly pursuing the goal of achieving its ambitious immigration target for the current year. The data released by the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) shows that a total of 72510 newcomers were welcomed by Canada in the months of January and February together. If this rate is continued for the rest of the year, Canada would be admitting a total of 435060 new permanent residents in 2022. The target set by Canada for this year is 431,645.

35,330 new permanent residents came to Canada in January and another 37,180 in February. According to the IRCC, Canada welcomed more than 108000 newcomers in the first quarter of 2022, though data for the month of March has not been revealed yet.

Canada immigration levels soar

Immigration to Canada was almost 50.8 per cent in the first two months of the current year. But it was only 43.3 per cent during the same period in 2020, before the onset of the pandemic. It means the immigration levels in Canada are high compared to the pre-pandemic period. In 2019, the immigration was 46.3 per cent.

Canada needs immigrants

Canada is facing a huge level of labour shortage and the aging population still continues to be a major challenge to the country. So Canada is keen to welcome more immigrants. Canada believes that bringing skilled workers to the country would help businesses grow and create good jobs across the country. Speaking about the matter, Canada’s Immigration Minister Sean Fraser said in February, “Immigration has helped shape Canada into the country that it is today…We are focused on economic recovery and immigration is the key to getting there. Setting bold new immigration targets, as outlined in the 2022-2024 Levels Plan, will further help bring the immeasurable contribution of immigrants to our communities and across all sectors of the economy.” Fraser had also attributed the growth of Canada’s tech sector to immigrants.

Canada will be welcoming 447055 new immigrants in 2023 and 451000 new immigrants in 2024.
