Canada’s population increased a full percentage point in the third quarter of 2022, thanks to immigrants. This was revealed in the data released by Statistics Canada. By October 1, Canada’s total population was 39,292,355. This is 362,453 more or 0.9 percent more, compared to July 1.
“This was the highest quarterly population growth rate since the second quarter of 1957 when the population grew by 1.2 per cent,” reports Statistics Canada.
In that year, Canada’s population was 16.7 million people and it increased by 198,000 people. This rapid population growth was caused by the high number of births during the post-war baby boom and the high immigration of refugees following the Hungarian Revolution in 1956.
It means, even after six decades, immigration remains to be the biggest contributor for Canada’s population growth.
“Canada’s total population growth for the first nine months of 2022 was 776,217 people and has already surpassed the total growth for any full-year period since Confederation in 1867,” notes the report of Statistics Canada.
Immigration fuelling population growth in Canada
“This high level of growth was mostly, 94 per cent, due to international migration which added 340,666 people … pushed Canada’s population over 39 million for the first time.”
The record – breaking immigration targets being set by the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) are certainly the major factor that drives this population growth.
Canada Immigration Levels Plan for 2023-25
The Immigration Levels Plan of Canada for 2023-25 has set record immigration targets through to 2015. As per this Plan, , the federal government targets record immigration to Canada each year through 2025.
The target set for the next year is 465,000 new permanent residents. The target for 2024 is 485,000 new permanent residents and for 2025, the target is 500,000. It means Canada will be welcoming a total of 1.45 million new immigrants over the coming three years.
Statistics Canada has also predicted that after 19 years, one third of Canada’s population will be immigrants. It is also predicted that the influx of immigrants is also going to alter demographic structure of the country. Earlier, most of the immigrants to Canada were Europeans. But currently, Asians constitute the major part of immigrants to the country. The number of immigrants from Africa is also increasing, as per the data.
