Canada will be welcoming twice as many immigrants through the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) in the current year compared to the previous year, as per the data from the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada(IRCC). In the first nine months of the current year itself, Canada welcomed as many as 21500 permanent residents under the PGP. If this trend continues, the country will be welcoming a total of 28667 immigrants through PGP by the end of the current year. It means 16927 more parents and grandparents would be reuniting with their children and grandchildren this year, compared to 2021. It shows a growth of 144.2 per cent than the total number of 11740 immigrants who arrived through PGP last year.
Among the Canadian provinces and territories, Ontario welcomed the highest number of PGP immigrants this year, with an increase of 8633 more immigrants compared to last year. British Columbia welcomed 2930 more immigrants, while Alberta welcomed 3122 more immigrants. At the same time, Saskatchewan is expected to welcome 558 more immigrants this year. Manitoba will also witness an increase in the number of permanent residents it will admit in the current year.
How to sponsor your parents/grandparents through PGP?
To sponsor their parents or grandparents for permanent residents in Canada, a Canadian permanent resident or citizen must meet the following requirements:
-Be at least 18 years old
-Live in Canada
– Have the financial capacity to support those whom they want to sponsor
-Agree to financially support their parents and parents they sponsor for at least 20 years.
-Agree to reimburse any social assistance paid out to the sponsored person during this period.
At present, the processing time for PGP applications is 37 months.
Canada Super Visa
Though this is not a permanent residence visa, it allows parents and grandparents to stay with their dear ones in Canada for a long period. As PGP has a huge number of applicants, it is not possible for all applicants to get an opportunity to bring their parents or grandparents to Canada. So, they can apply for Canada Super Visa. It allows parents/grandparents to stay in Canada for up to five years in one stretch. The validity of Canada Super Visa is 10 years and it is a multiple-entry visa. However, the holder must have a medical insurance and meet other criteria.
Those who want to stay for less than six months can come to Canada through visit visa.
