Over the past few years, India has been remaining the largest source country for immigrants to Canada. In 2021, Canada welcomed more than 405000 immigrants and around one third of these immigrants were of Indian origin. Also, almost 50 percent of the nearly 450000 international students who were admitted to the Canadian institutions of higher education were Indians. There are a number of international and domestic Canadian factors that make Canada an attractive destination for Indian immigrants.
Let’s explore what are they:
First of all, India has a growing middle-class population. The youth in this population section possess high level of education, language skills, work experience and settlement funds which make them eligible for permanent residence in Canada. Moreover, they are ready to explore better opportunities and aspire higher standards of livings abroad.
Another factor that led to increased interest for Indians towards Canada was the lack of permanent residence pathways in the US. Earlier, the US used to be the most popular destination for young immigrants from India, especially tech workers and health workers. But as the US made its immigration policies stricter, more Indian skilled workers started to migrate to Canada.
The immigration policies of Canada in the recent years also turn out to be favourable to Indians. The Express Entry system is a major federal economic immigration program of Canada. Under the system, candidates are assessed on the basis of the Comprehensive Ranking System(CRS) score. The CRS score is awarded on the basis of various factors such as age, education, language proficiency, work experience etc. Indians tend to score high on these eligibility factors, which increase their probability of obtaining Canadian permanent residence through Express Entry.
Moreover, Canada has a large Indian diaspora, which means there is an increased prevalence of Indian culture. Canada is a multicultural society that allows its members to practice their own culture. Because of this reason, Indians feel at home in Canada that helps in their integration to the Canadian society.
Canada Study Permit through Student Direct Stream
A high number of Indian students are obtaining admission to Canadian institutions of higher education through Student Direct Stream (SDS). The Stream allows Indians to speed up their application process for Canada study permit. Further, Student Direct Stream has a higher rate of approval compared to normal pathways for obtaining Canadian study permit. These students, after completing their education, can apply for Post-graduation Work Permit (PGWP). The Canadian work experience earned with PGWP help the students gain more points under Express Entry and Provincial Nominee Program.
In the coming few years, Canada is planning to welcome a high number of immigrants to support the country’s post-pandemic economic recovery. In 2022, Canada will be welcoming more than 432000 immigrants and by 2024, this will be increased to 450000. The targets are likely to increase further when Canada announces the Immigration Levels Plan 2023-2025 by November 1. It means more Indians are likely to get a chance to migrate to Canada in the coming years.
