The number of job vacancies in Canada has reached record high, as per the data released by Statistics Canada. Overall, the job vacancy rate in Canada witnessed an increase of 4.7% from the first quarter of 2022. It is 42.3% higher compared to the second quarter of 2021.
There are around one million job vacancies in Canada across all sectors. It means an overall percentage of 5.7%, an all-time high.
Further, wages in professional, scientific and technical sectors have witnessed the largest increase in wages, 11.3%. The average hourly wage in these sectors is $27.05
Canada provinces with highest job vacancy rate
The highest level of job vacancy rate was reported mainly in six provinces, namely Ontario, Nova Scotia, British Columbia, Manitoba and Alberta. In Ontario, the rise was 6.6%. In Nova Scotia, there was a rise of 6% and in the rest of the provinces, the increase was between 5.6% and 2.4%
Sectors with highest job vacancy rate
The job vacancy rate in the healthcare sector has consistently been remaining almost the same, around 6%. However, the job vacancy rate has increased around 29% compared to the second quarter of 2021. Some hospitals in Canada even had to reduce their services, including temporary closing of emergency rooms owing to staff shortage. Manitoba has the highest job vacancy rate in the healthcare sector, which is 6.7%. Similarly, the job vacancy rate in tech occupations in the natural and applied sciences has increased in this quarter to 9.6%.
