The Ontario government is planning to double the intake of economic immigrants to the province with an aim to address the severe labour shortage crisis. So, in 2025, the province will be welcoming more than 18000 economic immigrants as compared to 9000 immigrants welcomed in 2021. Data shows that more than 300,000 jobs are remaining vacant in the province. Increasing the number of immigrants would allow the province to select more workers for filling the vacancies in skilled trades, technology and healthcare sectors.“…today’s announcement is a significant win for the people of Ontario and will help us control our economic destiny by selecting more of the skilled immigrants we know are well-placed to succeed and build stronger communities for all of us,” said Monte McNaughton, Ontario’s Minister of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development about the decision to increase Ontario’s immigrant intake. He also thanked federal Immigration Minister Sean Fraser for making this possible.
It was in April 2021, Minister McNaughton raised the demand to double the nomination allocation for Ontario. In 2022, Ontario reached its nomination allocation of 9750 immigrants, by welcoming 3,900 skilled trades workers, 2,200 software and IT workers, and nearly 100 nurses and personal support workers.
In 2023, Ontario will be nominating 16,500 immigrant candidates. In 2024, the number will be more than 17,000.
