The Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has started issuing invitations for the Parents and Grandparents Program(PGP) 2021. This year, a total of 30000 Canadian citizens and permanent residents will be invited to apply for sponsoring their parents and grandparents for permanent residence in Canada. These invitations will be issued over a period of two weeks between September 23 and October 7. Those who receive the invitations may submit the complete application within 60 days.
If the sponsorship is approved, the parents and grandparents will be able to become permanent residents in Canada and enjoy all benefits associated with it, including free healthcare. However, it is also a fact that, receiving a PGP invitation is highly difficult considering the huge demand among Canadian permanent residents and citizens to sponsor their parents and grandparents.
The candidates to whom the invitations are being sent are those who submitted their interest to sponsor forms in October and November 2020. A lottery was held in January 2021 in which 10000 sponsors received invitations. The 30000 invitees in the current round of lottery will be drawn from the same pool of 2020. IRCC has not yet specified how it will be managing the PGP in 2022.
Eligibility criteria for PGP
In order to receive a PGP invitation for sponsoring your parents or granparents for Canada PR, you need to meet certain eligibility criteria. You need to be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident and should be at least 18 years of age. You must also demonstrate to the immigration authorities that you meet the Minimum Necessary Income to sponsor your parents/grandparents. You must also submit your Canada Revenue Agency(CRA) notices of assessment for the years 2020, 2019, 2018 tax years. The sponsors also need to sign an undertaking agreement and they are obliged to repay any social assistance claimed by the parents and grandparents they sponsor during the undertaking period, which is 20 years for non-Quebec residents and 10 years for Quebec residents.
What if you did not get PGP invitation?
If you have not received a PGP visa, you may apply for a Canada Super Visa to bring their parents and grandparents to Canada. Canadian citizens and permanent residents may submit an application for Super Visa anytime they want and it allows for multiple entries to Canada over a period of 10 years.
