According to the data released by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), the country has welcomed over 70000 new immigrants in the first quarter of 2021. This is quite high compared to the average number of immigrants coming to Canada every quarter since the start of the pandemic, which is around 30000-40000. In March 2021 alone, Canada welcomed 22,425 new permanent residents.
It shows that Canada is well in pace to achieve its immigration target set for the year 2021, which is 401000 new immigrants. The country has set even higher targets for the coming two years.
In 2020, the total number of immigrants welcomed by Canada was 184000. The number had fallen from 341000 in 2019, owing to COVID-19. It is because of this reason, Canada is welcoming a higher number of immigrants this year with an aim to compensate the fall in the number of new immigrants last year. But in the light of COVID-19 restrictions, Canada is prioritizing those who are already in Canada to award permanent residence status.
Canada Express Entry immigration in 2021
A majority of immigrants are entering Canada through the Express Entry, which is the primary pathway for economic immigrants to become permanent residents in the country. Under the Express Entry, Canada has welcomed both Provincial Nominee Program(PNP) and Canadian Experience Class(CEC) candidates. But the highest majority of Express Entry candidates were invited through CEC in 2021. In the February 13 Express Entry draw, IRCC invited 273332 CEC candidates. This number is almost six times higher than previously highest number of invitations issued in an Express Entry draw.
Other important pathways
IRCC has launched six new permanent residence pathways to transition some 90000 essential workers and international graduates for permanent residence. These streams are expected to help IRCC achieve its annual immigration target in third and fourth quarters of 2021.
Many of those who have received Express Entry invitations last year and the first half of this year are expected to get their permanent resident status by the end of this year. In addition, IRCC is also planning to land at least 40,000 essential workers and graduates by year’s end.
