Australia needs immigration more than ever before to overcome the impact of corona virus on the economy, says Dr Shane Geha, Managing Director of EG Urban Planning. In the context of growing fears of recession in Australia, Dr Geha said the country needed migrants more now than ever before in order to boost the economic output, especially in the education, tourism and agriculture industries which are the hardest hit. According to the expert, these industries almost entirely rely on migrant populations for work. If Australia restricts immigration, there will be a huge shortage of workers who are essential for the GDP growth of the country, according to the expert.
The expert highlighted the need for increased immigration levels in the context of growing sentiments against immigration fuelled by the global spread of coronavirus. He said the corona virus infection affects the aged population more severely. According to Dr Geha, more migrants are needed to replace the tax revenue “generated by the working majority aged between 20 and 60” in order to pay for healthcare for the ageing demographic.
The economic experts predict that the GDP growth of the country in the month of March will be severely affected by the impact of bushfires and corona outbreak. If the outbreak is not contained soon, the Australian economy may even slip into a recession, for the first time after the 90s. With immigration, Australia can resist recession to a great extent, the expert believes.
