Canada topped the list of the most accepting countries for migrants on the Gallup’s second administration of its Migrant Acceptance Index. Canada’s score on the Index is 8.46 out of a possible 9.0. Australia came fourth on the Index and US in the sixth place.
Gallup, Inc. is the world-famous American analytics and advisory company based in Washington, D.C. known for conducting public opinion polls. The Migrant Acceptance Index was prepared based on three questions asked by Gallup to respondents in 140 countries in 2016 and 2017, which was updated again in 145 countries in 2019. The questions were how the respondents felt about migrants living in their country, becoming their neighbors and marrying into their families.
Canada has a long history of accepting migrants. Canada’s position on the Migrant Acceptance Index list has improved significantly this year compared to the 2017 results, as in the 2017 list, Canada had only fourth position.
The immigrant-friendly policies adopted by the Liberal government of Canada led by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau are observed to be a major reason for this improvement. While the US shut their doors for immigrants under the Donald Trump government, Canada opened its gates for immigrants even wider in the past few years.
Almost 94 percent of the Canadian residents said migrants living in their country was a good thing. 95 percent of them felt migrants being in their neighborhood was a good thing. Those who said a migrant marrying into their family was a good thing comprised 91 percent.
The survey also observed that there was a direct correlation between the political leanings of the respondents and their views on migration. While those who supported Trump in the US scored less on the Migrant Acceptance Index, while those who didn’t scored high. Similarly, those who supported Trudeau in Canada scored high on the Migrant Acceptance Index compared to those who didn’t. The study also found that the acceptance of migrants was higher among those who had higher education qualifications as well as those living in the urban areas.
