The data on the number of newcomers accepted by Canada in the recent months indicate that the country is committed to hit the annual immigration set for the year 2021, which is 401000 new permanent residents. Canada Immigration Minister Marco Mendicino also reiterated the country’s commitment to meet the immigration target to media earlier this month.
Canada immigration 2021
In the first five months of 2021, Canada welcomed a total of 108730 new permanent residents. In June, another 35600 candidates were admitted to the country, bringing the total number of new comers to 144,330.
It means Canada needs to admit 256670 more newcomers this year to meet the annual immigration target. So, more than 42778 new permanent residents will have to be admitted to the country every month till the end of this year. The month in which Canada admitted the highest number of new permanent residents was in July 2020. In 2019, before COVID-19 affected the immigration system of Canada, the country used to accept 28431 new permanent residents on an average every month. But the immigration rates drastically fell in 2020, owing to the impact of the pandemic. In order to compensate that, Canada has set ambitious immigration targets for the coming three years, as per the Immigration Levels Plan 2021-2023. So the country will accept 401000 permanent residents in 2021, 411,000 in 2022 and 421,000 in 2023.
Measures to boost immigration
Canada has adopted several measures to promote immigration. The country held the largest Express Entry draw on February 13, inviting a total of 27,332 Canadian Experience Class candidates with a minimum Comprehensive Ranking System(CRS) score of 75. Canada also launched six new permanent residency pathways for temporary foreign workers and international students.
After months-long border restrictions, Canada is now scaling back the restrictions in the wake of COVID situation improving in the country. From September 7 onwards, fully vaccinated travellers from any country can travel to Canada. It means more permanent residents will be allowed to move in to the country.
